Agate is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending homelessness and hunger through action and advocacy. We provide emergency services, shelter, and housing programs for individuals and families. We encourage applicants with lived experience to apply. Our Values include Integrity, Equity, Humanity, and Creativity. The Outreach and Shelter Department serves single adults through emergency response programs like Shelter, Street Outreach, and the Welcome Center. The goal is to build rapport and connect individuals to resources for housing stability and self-sufficiency. The Shelter Advocate is part of a team responsible for daily operations at two housing-focused shelter program sites in Minneapolis. One shelter serves single adults experiencing homelessness, with a focus on partnered adults of all genders. The other shelter serves single adults based on community needs. The Shelter Advocate works collaboratively to ensure consistent, affirming, and safe operations for guests and volunteers. Primary responsibilities include answering phones, managing client access, performing intakes, monitoring guest behavior, cleaning, laundry, meal preparation and service, administrative work, documentation, and data entry. As part of a housing-focused program, the Shelter Advocate also provides core services such as offering information, making referrals, and assisting with paperwork or services navigation. Additional duties include attending staff meetings, updating rosters using HMIS, and representing Agate's shelters at community events and trainings. Overnight shifts are typically 9:30 PM to 7:30 AM or 10:30 PM to 8:30 AM. This is an active position requiring employees to remain awake and complete physical tasks. Full-time employment includes 1-4 standby shifts per month, where employees may be called in to work if a staff member is absent.
