The Shelter Assistant is responsible for providing shelter services, maintaining the safety and security of the shelter and enforcing shelter policies during assigned shift. This role requires utilizing knowledge of PADS policy and procedure to maintain services and safety of the shelter. The position involves overseeing shelter services including access to lockers, sleeping rooms, sitting/rec areas, showers, dining area, meals, and laundry. The Shelter Assistant will also assist clients with life skills training in collaboration with case management staff, help keep the shelter clean, and answer incoming phone calls. A key aspect of this role is working effectively with a diverse population, including individuals with mental health, physical health, and substance abuse diagnoses, and maintaining professional judgment in handling disputes and challenging behaviors. The ability to manage multiple requests, triage situations, and determine when to call for crisis intervention or 911 is essential. The role also includes monitoring shelter security, building professional rapport with clients, using nonviolent crisis intervention methods, respecting client privacy and confidentiality, maintaining ethical boundaries, and keeping required records. Regular, reliable attendance is expected, along with performing other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
