This position is temporary and is intended to provide coverage during an employee’s leave of absence. Employment in this role is contingent upon the employee’s leave status and may end at any time based on the employee’s return to work or business needs. Requirements

  • Must be able to pass criminal background check
  • Must be a team player committed to the common purpose of assisting individuals in need.
  • Must be sensitive and act accordingly to program participants who may be dealing with multiple traumas and stressors.
  • Must possess the ability to create a pleasant and friendly atmosphere and develop helpful relationships with program participants, staff, and volunteers.
  • Must possess the ability to describe in writing all incidents and activities in shelter in a clear and understandable manner in a daily shelter log and incident reports.
  • Must be able to describe emergency situations by telephone to emergency responders and supervisory personnel.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and be able to fulfill internal driving training while operating a Salvation Army vehicle.
  • Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of a variety of human behaviors and be able to adapt to any given situation.
  • Must be able to show strength of character in the face of individuals in crisis, trauma and undefined housing status.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all shelter workers on staff, including hours worked, policies followed during shift, continued training, and oversight of nightly shelter operations.
  • Set up schedule for shelter workers on a 7-day basis.
  • Be the contact person for all calls from shelter workers needing to change shifts and/or call out on shifts, making necessary contacts to keep shifts filled.
  • Contact the Corps Officers if someone cannot be found to cover a specific shift.
  • In the case of an emergency and as a last resort, be available to cover a shift that is open due to staff call out.
  • Review nightly shift logs and follow up with staff and volunteers as needed.
  • Continue to update the Corps Officer of any unusual events or occurrences that may have happened the night before.
  • Make aware of any violation of policy to reporting staff, develop a written report noting the violation, discuss it with the shelter worker, have them sign the written form, and share the report and follow up with the Corps Officer.
  • Sit on the Client Grievance Committee, making decisions concerning client issues, termination from the program, safety concerns, and operating changes.
  • Monitor supplies and replenish as needed, including janitorial supplies, bathroom supplies, hygiene supplies, intake supplies, and emergency supplies.
  • Respond appropriately to employee and volunteer concerns in the program.
  • Bring any concerns or requests that cannot be handled to the immediate attention of the Corps Officer.
  • Work different shifts as required, with two standard shifts: first (opening) and second (closing), each 6.5 hours in length with a 30-minute lunch break.
  • Follow basic rules of operation for clients and staff, including admittance of clients, enforcement of personal item rules, issuing of bedding, and general cleaning.
  • Perform tasks for opening or closing the shelter operation by completing the assigned task sheet.
  • Abide by The Salvation Army’s Social Services Code of Ethics.
  • Provide a warm, caring and courteous environment that encourages cooperation, respect and a feeling of community.
  • Enter pertinent information of all activities and events into the shelter daily log.
  • Provide all program participants, staff, and volunteers with a safe and secure environment, including regular walk-throughs of sleeping areas, bathrooms, and shower/hygiene areas, and monitoring client areas.
  • Diffuse any conflicts as they arise and communicate findings or concerns with other staff and the Corps Officer.
  • Distribute personal necessities to clients as needed and as items are available.
  • As time permits, launder excess blankets, towels, and bedding.
  • Support volunteers by orienting them to safety guidelines and responsibilities.
  • Attend any and all meetings scheduled by the shelter supervisory for training, planning, and operations.
  • Maintain strict client confidentiality, keeping records secure and notifying the Shelter Supervisor of any issues/problems.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary as assigned or requested by a supervisor.
