About The Position
The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech is currently looking to fill an LVT position that supports the College of Veterinary Medicine's a Shelter Medicine and Surgery clerkship. This position will assist at numerous animal shelters and animal welfare organizations in the New River Valley. Each day is allocated to a different facility, which requires daily commute.
Requirements
- LVT Licensed Veterinary Technician.
- Considerable experience in a veterinary practice with knowledge of surgical procedures, general laboratory operations, and anesthetic and surgical equipment.
- Experience and familiarity with veterinary anesthesia machines, surgical instruments, procedures, and terminology.
- Basic knowledge of animal handling and restraint.
- Competency in calculating and drawing up medications, including controlled substances, under veterinarian supervision, with a thorough understanding of DEA compliance requirements.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work efficiently with little supervision.
- Ability to multitask effectively and perform well in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and workflows throughout the day.
- Strong critical-thinking skills with the ability to think creatively and develop practical solutions to challenges.
- Demonstrates patience, professionalism, and a willingness to support others in a positive learning environment.
- Ability to mentor, teach, and provide constructive guidance to students, interns, and team members while fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
Nice To Haves
- Degree in Biology, Animal Science, Dairy Science, Veterinary Technology, or related area.
- Experience in shelter medicine and/or high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgery.
- Knowledge of computers with emphasis on word processing and simple spreadsheets.
