About The Position

The Shelter Attendant is responsible for the overall care of all the animals within the shelter. The responsibilities will vary based on the needs of the shelter. This role requires a commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the Animal Shelter, with a highly motivated, out-going, polite, and professional manner. The ideal candidate is a team player, able to work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task, with compassion for animals and comfort working in a shelter environment. Willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace is essential.

  • Knowledge of animal breeds and behaviors.
  • Basic office and computer skills.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Animal care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to cleaning procedures for animal care, kennel maintenance, sanitation, parasite and disease control, and other animal care practices.
  • Maintain animal housing areas and the shelter in a clean and sanitary condition, including morning cleaning, disinfecting, and ongoing cleaning throughout the day.
  • Ensure fresh water is available and easily accessible to each animal at all times.
  • Maintain a humane and caring attitude towards animals, with knowledge of proper handling and restraint.
  • Observe animals for safety, health, and comfort, ensuring clean and dry bedding.
  • Promptly notify the Kennel Attendant Coordinator or Animal Services Director of any animal showing signs of stress, injury, or illness.
  • Assist in the prompt and proper receiving and kenneling of new animals, including examination, vaccination, deworming, flea/tick treatment, intake photos, placing animals in clean kennels with food/water/bedding, intake paperwork, logging, and placing name cards.
  • Assist citizens looking for lost pets or seeking to adopt animals, aiming to increase adoption rates and ensure good matches.
  • Be courteous to the public and provide accurate information about animals and the shelter.
  • Demonstrate a low level of absenteeism and tardiness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers to improve the quality of life for resident animals.
  • Report problems or concerns to the Animal Control Supervisor.
  • Represent the Animal Shelter in a professional manner at all times.
