About The Position

The primary responsibility of the Shelter Attendant is to ensure that basic, safe, clean, and professional shelter services are provided to clients. This role is an integral part of a reliable and committed Shelter Team.

Requirements

  • Experience in human services, preferably with homeless families.
  • BA or MHT degree in social or behavioral sciences preferred, or related work experience.
  • Basic understanding of homelessness and its various characteristics.
  • Experience with mental illness and/or chemical dependency preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of Homefull.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of shelter, laundry, food, and common areas.
  • Operate all functions at the shelter front desk, including checking visitors in and out, answering telephones, and monitoring security systems.
  • Coordinate safety and security by monitoring all general access areas and enforcing shelter rules.
  • Assist with shelter operations, including food service, basic cleaning, mail sorting, and assisting with daily schedules for showers, meals, locker time, and phone time.
  • Record significant events involving shelter clients and building operations activities in a daily logbook, read the logbook daily, and coordinate with on-site security.
  • Respond to emergencies and initiate action as required, including contacting emergency-response systems.
  • Interact with shelter clients in the program’s common spaces.
  • Assist supportive services/CM staff in coordinating services to shelter clients.
  • Assist supportive service staff in initiating, facilitating, and promoting activities, support groups, and community meetings.
  • Build relationships with clients to encourage engagement in CM Support Services.
  • Respond to shelter clients’ concerns/complaints and share them with the Shelter Manager.
  • Ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, and confidentiality in all professional communications (verbal, written, and electronic).
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques when needed and treat clients with dignity and respect.
  • Exhibit commitment to work ethic through punctuality, preparedness, and professionalism.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
