About The Position

Design Mechanical, Inc. a Comfort Systems USA company, operates out of two key locations in Colorado: our corporate headquarters and cutting-edge fabrication facility in Louisville, and our mountain region shop in Gypsum. Together, we’re a team of over 300 employees—and growing. This is an entry-level position where the apprentice will perform general fabricating duties as required with supervision and progress through the trade. The role involves attending training classes, developing good housekeeping and safety habits, and performing laborer tasks. As the apprentice progresses through different levels (Apprentice 1, 2, 3, and 4), responsibilities increase to include operating machinery, reading blueprints, installing HVAC systems, fabricating ductwork, soldering, welding, and leading helpers, culminating in obtaining necessary certifications upon graduation.

Requirements

Minimum 18 years of age
High school graduate/GED
Mechanical aptitude
Willingness to learn through on-the-job training and technical school courses
Reliable transportation to and from work required
Can document approximately 2,000 hours of employment (Apprentice 1)
Can document approximately 4,000 hours of employment (Apprentice 2)
Can document approximately 6,000 hours of employment (Apprentice 3)
Can document 8,000 hours of employment (Apprentice 4)

Responsibilities

Perform entry-level general fabricating duties as required with supervision.
Progress through the trade.
Basic math skills.
Trained to understand and operates all machinery.
Understands terminology, preps ductwork for installation, has basic hand tools as per tool list, and can properly use them.
Attends all Design Mechanical’s Apprenticeship training classes regularly and outside schooling, if available.
Develops good housekeeping and safety habits.
Responsible for accurate material checkout from warehouse and labor accounting.
Attentive to following instructions and has a positive attitude toward leadman, fellow employees, and customers.
Can document approximately 2,000 hours of employment (Apprentice 1).
Perform laborer tasks including such duties as sweeping, cleaning, delivering, loading, unloading, hole cutting, etc.
Read non-complex blueprints, detail shop orders from prints, and onsite measurements (Apprentice 2).
Install HVAC systems with minor supervision (Apprentice 2).
Set up and operate all job-related tools safely (Apprentice 2).
Fabricate duct and simple fittings (Apprentice 2).
Understand the fundamentals of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (Apprentice 2).
Flat solder copper and galvanized joints, properly water seal duct joints, and OSM joints (Apprentice 2).
Be willing to help solve installation problems (Apprentice 2).
Document approximately 4,000 hours of employment (Apprentice 2).
Do all types of small jobs alone with supervision including add-on air conditioning, furnace change-outs, humidifiers, air cleaners (Apprentice 3).
Can install all types of normal residential, commercial, and industrial HVAC systems with supervision. Able to impart trade knowledge to and lead a helper (Apprentice 3).
Can coordinate work with customers and other trades (Apprentice 3).
Can weld light gauge sheet and lightweight angle iron frames (Apprentice 3).
Can complete jobs successfully in terms of labor and material budgets (Apprentice 3).
Document approximately 6,000 hours of employment (Apprentice 3).
Application for certification at local jurisdictions as required (Apprentice 4).
Know fundamental design and can successfully complete all jobs as per Design Mechanical’s standards (Apprentice 4).
Can document 8,000 hours of employment (Apprentice 4).
Support the total quality effort. Identify and respond to the needs of internal and external customers 100% of the time (Apprentice 4).
Work within the guidelines of the safety and employee policy (Apprentice 4).
Upon graduation, obtain Denver Journeyman Heating and Ventilating Certificate (Apprentice 4).
Other duties as assigned.
