About The Position

In this role you will, under limited supervision, fabricate, install and repair products that aid in the facility maintenance or research operations of the laboratory.

Requirements

  • Completion of an apprenticeship program for Sheet Metal Workers and 5 years of experience in the sheet metal field, or an equivalent combination of formal training and work experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a formal training program and industrial experience.
  • Experience using laser cutting machinery.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses and maintenance.
  • Good mechanical, mathematical and reading skills.
  • General computer skills.
  • Ability to perform basic trade skills related to the use of tools and creation of material lists.
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to choose the most appropriate action.
  • Ability to give attention to detail and thoroughly complete work tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Design, sketch, read and interpret templates, blueprints, drawings, sketches and verbal instructions
  • Determine project requirements, such as scope, assembly sequences, required methods or materials
  • Lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference lines on material
  • Fabricate, install and maintain heating, ventilation and air-conditioning duct systems as well as roofs, siding, rain gutters, downspouts, exhaust equipment, hoods, outdoor signs, machine guards and many other products made from various sheet metals
  • Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff or smooth surfaces, seams, or joints of assembled parts, using hand tools or portable power tools
  • Fasten seams or joints together with welds, bolts, cement, rivets, solder, caulks, metal drive clips or bonds to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items
  • Operate shop equipment to roll, bend, shear and punch metals
  • Coordinate with peers, Facility Managers, Supervisors and Engineers to complete jobs
  • Work with Welders and other crafts to carry-out assignments
