Performs journey-level sheet metal installation, fabrication, assembly and repair work. Requirements

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship training program in sheet metal work of at least four (4) years duration.
  • Five (5) years of experience in sheet metal work in the building trades, one (1) year of which must have been at the journey-level.
  • Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
  • Required experience must be fully met at the time of filing and clearly indicated on the application.
  • Applicants who expect to qualify under Option I, must include a legible photocopy of their apprenticeship training certificate.
  • In order to receive credit for the required certification you must include a legible copy of the official certificate at the time of filing or within seven 7 calendar days from the date of filing application.

Responsibilities

  • Performs journey-level sheet metal installation, fabrication, assembly and repair work.
  • Lays out, cuts, shapes and constructs articles of sheet metal, including black and galvanized iron and steel, tin, copper, brass, zinc, and stainless steel.
  • Supervises apprentices and helpers.
  • Punches or drills holes for rivets, bolts or metal screws.
  • Grinds and files seams, joints and rough surfaces; burrs and turns edges.
  • Fabricates or repairs such sheet metal articles as roofing, gutters, flashing, louvers, ventilators, ducts, hoods, sinks, steam tables, trays, lockers, shelves, fire doors and metal windows.
  • Transfers patterns from blueprints to metal, using scale, compass, divider, prick punch and other layout tools.
  • Fabricates signs, ducts, vessels, etc., from plastics.
  • Solders, welds and brazes.
  • Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites in order to transport the necessary tools, equipment, and materials required to perform the job.
  • Maintains tools and equipment.
