About The Position

The Sheet Metal Mechanic works at the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System in the Facilities Management Service, supporting the medical center by constructing, installing, and repairing HVAC systems and other structures. The position performs complex sheet metal work, including designing and installing irregularly shaped ductwork and developing patterns for components with irregular angles, planes, and curves. The mechanic uses shop mathematics and measuring instruments to form, fit, and repair a range of metal components and systems, and reads blueprints to plan work and determine material needs. The role follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work takes place indoors and outdoors, including in heat, cold, and areas under or outside buildings. Installation, inspection, and repair work may occur in dirty, noisy, or odorous conditions, with exposure to risks such as strains, cuts, bruises, burns, and infections. Physical work frequently involves handling materials weighing more than 45 pounds and sustained industrial-construction activities.

Requirements

  • Evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to demonstrate the ability to perform the work; no specific length of training or experience is required.
  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including reading blueprints.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools for metal work.
  • Dexterity for assembly, disassembly, and reassembly.
  • Knowledge of equipment, structures, and materials used in construction, repair, and forging.
  • Ability in layout and pattern development, including geometric projection and triangulation.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Selective Service registration for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Successful completion of required background/security investigation and pre-employment physical.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
  • Ability to meet the position's physical demands, including frequently handling materials weighing more than 45 pounds and sustained physical activity.

Responsibilities

  • Design, construct, and install complex or unusually shaped sheet metal components, including ductwork curves, bends, transitions, and reducers.
  • Develop patterns for components with numerous or irregular angles, planes, and curves using radial-line and parallel-line development principles.
  • Use shop mathematics to calculate irregular cuts, angles, and pitches; bend or form items to varying angles, curves, pitches, or circumferences.
  • Independently develop plans and templates to construct, assemble, and install irregular items and systems with features such as cornices, canopies, transition elbows, and oblique, truncated, or frustum cones.
  • Use measuring instruments to assess structural damage and determine sheet metal replacement or system installation needs.
  • Work with metals and materials including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material, and aluminum alloys.
  • Operate complex hand and power machinery, including forming machines, brakes, shears, rotary machines, welding equipment, crimpers, and beading machines.
  • Use fastening methods including dovetail, set-in bottom, burred-bottom, wired, lock, and welded seams.
  • Use crimping, burning, turning, and beading machines, as well as soldering and welding equipment.
  • Measure airflow, determine duct sizes, plan duct routes, and modify systems while preserving their working integrity.
  • Read blueprints and perform material takeoffs for ordering.
  • Install, inspect, and repair systems and structures throughout the medical center.

Benefits

  • Federal benefits package available to the employee and family; specific benefits depend on position eligibility.
  • Potential credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work or military service, subject to request and approval before appointment and not guaranteed.
