About The Position

Under an on-the-job training program with close supervision, this role involves inspecting, installing, maintaining, and repairing sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and sewer system appurtenances of the City storm and sanitary sewer systems. The position requires successful completion of pre-employment screenings and verification of eligibility to work in the United States. Progression in the training series to Sr. Operator level is required to remain in the program, including promotion to Operator within twelve (12) months. Employees must successfully complete a 6-month probationary period and are willing to work overtime and standby as needed. Failure to obtain required licenses and make satisfactory progress in the training program within specified timelines could lead to termination.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate orally and carry out oral instructions.
  • Skill in the use of the more common shop tools.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under unfavorable climatic conditions or in mud or water.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to meet the physical, mental, and visual standards of the job.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety to one’s self, others persons, and equipment.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and to work from blueprints.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License before appointment.
  • Ability to obtain a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) within 30 days of date of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL A or B license within 90 days of date of hire.
  • Ability to obtain an N endorsement within 90 days of date of hire.
  • Must make continuous satisfactory progress in the training program including promotion to Operator within twelve (12) months to remain employed in the series.
  • Employee must successfully complete 6-month probationary period.
  • Willing to work overtime and standby as needed.
  • Must maintain residency within 20 miles of the nearest boundary of the City of Flint.

Nice To Haves

  • Underground excavation, heavy equipment or sewer maintenance experience preferred.
  • Qualified candidates must possess a Class A at the end of the Sewer Systems Construction Trainee series.

Responsibilities

  • Makes repairs to the City storm and sanitary sewer systems.
  • Lays new pipes, installs new taps, constructs and repairs manholes.
  • Cuts new pipe, cuts out damaged pipe, removes and replaces pipe fittings, makes connections to sewers and catch basins.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints in locating and marking water or sewer infrastructure.
  • Drives utility vehicles and dump trucks; orders materials, makes out simple reports on work performed and materials used.
  • Operates pneumatic air hammers, pumps, and other equipment in making excavations and backfills.
  • Performs manual labor and does a variety of routine tasks such as hand shoveling, hand grading, mixing cement.
  • Cleans, repairs, and places forms used for laying concrete, lays and finishes cement work.
  • May be required to perform Water Operations duties if necessary.
  • May assist in snow removal operations.
  • May assist in the installation of pipe lining/pipe patch.
