About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Sewer Foreman, this position performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of city sewer systems, facilities, streets, driveways, and walkways. This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing. Possession of a medical marijuana license does not exempt safety-sensitive positions from federal regulations. The City of Claremore implements a zero-tolerance policy for positive drug tests in safety-sensitive positions, resulting in immediate termination.

Requirements

  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
  • Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work safely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Oklahoma state driver's license and CDL Class “B” with air brake endorsement, or ability to obtain one.
  • Must be insurable with City’s insurance carrier.
  • Must hold a Certificate of Competency, as issued and required by state law from the Department of Environmental Quality and shall be the “D” level or higher classification.
  • Shall have one year from the date of appointment to secure a “D” level or higher license classification as water and sewer work operator.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-2 years of sewer system work is preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, clean, and repair sanitary sewer lines, manholes, lift stations, and related infrastructure.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment, including vacuum trucks, jetter trucks, pumps, hand tools, and power equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and routine inspections of sewer collection system components.
  • Respond to sewer backups, overflows, emergencies, and customer service requests.
  • Assist with locating underground utilities and sewer lines.
  • Perform excavation, pipe repair, and replacement activities.
  • Install, repair, and maintain sewer mains, service lines, valves, and manholes.
  • Conduct confined space entry operations in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, and repairs.
  • Assist in snow removal, storm response, and other Public Works activities as assigned.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergencies as required.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to wastewater collection systems.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
