About The Position

The Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals for the position of Sergeant (Corrections & Custody Officer 3) at the Monroe Correctional Complex. The Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC) is a 1700 bed male all-custody level facility located 30 miles northeast of Seattle. The complex consists of five major units: the Washington State Reformatory Unit (WSRU), Sky River Treatment Center, a large mental health inpatient treatment unit, Twin Rivers Unit (TRU), Intensive Management Unit (IMU), and the Minimum-Security Unit (MSU). MCC provides care the sickest and most complicated patients in our system. Services provide at MCC include custody and security, classification, education, offender work programs, health care (both patient and outpatient), mental health care, sex offender treatment, food service, maintenance, personnel, recreation, volunteer services, religious services, library services, offender records, visiting and extended family visiting. In this role, you will support the Department’s mission to improve public safety by supervising Corrections and Custody Officers while actively participating in custody operations at the Monroe Correctional Complex. As a Sergeant, you will maintain custody and control of residents while ensuring daily operations run smoothly, safely, and in alignment with established policies and procedures. The candidate of choice will play a key leadership role by directing and supporting staff in managing the movement, activities, and behavior of adult residents. Your work will directly contribute to a structured, secure, and respectful environment where safety is the top priority for residents, staff, and the surrounding community. At the same time, you will help bring the Reentry Division’s mission to life by fostering opportunities for residents to build skills, access resources, and prepare for successful reintegration into society. Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent AND Three years’ experience as a correctional officer in adult corrections.
OR Two years’ experience as a correctional officer in adult corrections AND Successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of accredited college-level course work.

Responsibilities

Supervising Corrections and Custody Officers (COs) which could include: Planning, assigning and reviewing the work of staff, adjusting assignments and schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels and responding to fluctuating workloads
Providing on-the-job training and monitoring completion of the on-the-job training requirements of in-training Corrections and Custody Officers
Serving as a positive role model for other officers
Evaluating employee performance and preparing performance appraisals
Ensuring the security of the facility and control movement into, out of, and within the facility in accordance with established department methods and procedures to include: Working with all staff within area of control to enhance staff safety and security.
Providing staff with the tools and skills needed to perform duties in a safe and secure manner
Monitoring resident activities and movement by observing resident activity at close range or at a distance and visually monitoring all security areas
Supervising and assisting COs in these tasks for quality control.
Providing oversight of the operation of gates, cameras, turnstiles, sally ports and other movement control systems
Applying appropriate, constructive, and professional authority working with a diverse population of residents which could look like: Strictly adhering to established staff safety practices and maintain personal accountability for the safety of self and others
Cultivating a culture of safety and accountability within work unit
Actively supporting and participating in safety and security exercises and drills, including conducting tabletop safety exercises during all-staff meetings on a quarterly basis
Establishing and enforcing an expectation of active participation by staff
Advising residents concerning rules, regulations, procedures, facility programs, policies, and behavior standards; investigate and respond to resident complaints
Effectively communicating with residents, staff and visitors in routine and emergent situations
Ensuring searches and inspections are carried out in accordance with established department methods and procedures
Communicate information to supervisors and staff regarding issues and areas of concern
