About The Position

This is an internal-only posting for the position of Sergeant within the Police division. The role is responsible for supervising the Patrol division, performing administrative duties, responding to and investigating police calls for service, patrolling, and taking enforcement action as necessary. The Sergeant will supervise staff by assigning, reviewing, and participating in patrol services, performing procedural tasks, and documenting subordinate work performance through notes and evaluations. The position also involves acting as incident commander during large-scale events and implementing departmental policies and procedures. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a salary range of $7517 - $9736 per month, plus benefits. Placement within the salary range will be based on the candidate's knowledge, skills, experience, training, and education. Qualified internal applicants must be off probationary status at the time of application.

Requirements

  • High school equivalency, course training in law enforcement, AND four years’ experience as a full-time police officer.
  • Minimum 2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity, such as Field Training Officer, Instructor, or Senior Officer.
  • Knowledge of Department planning, delegating assignments, prioritizing short and long-range tasks.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws.
  • Knowledge of patrol and investigative methods and techniques, use and safety precautions related to law enforcement equipment.
  • Knowledge of word processing applications, LEDS, and community resources.
  • Knowledge of modern leadership concepts and best practices.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers, various related software programs, standard office equipment and law enforcement equipment.
  • Strong time management, analytical, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Customer Service orientation and skills.
  • Effective management and team building skills, conflict resolution, and strong leadership; exceptional interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences; ability to communicate complex material in a simple, understandable manner; competence in Business English, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Strong reasoning, analysis, and problem-solving skills combined with excellent judgment and professionalism.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with City management, employees, Council members, other entities, and the public.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, to recognize actual and potential danger, and determine the proper course of action.
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff, taking a proactive approach to problem solving and implementing solutions for a positive outcome.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individual and groups regarding complex or sensitive issues.
  • Ability to elicit information and cooperation from individuals and groups.
  • Work with little supervision.
  • Ability to honor the confidentiality required of this position.
  • Physical ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Activity may require using deadly force to protect self or others.

  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License.
  • DPSST Intermediate Certification at time of application.
  • Must be in good Department standing (i.e. no disciplinary action within the past 12 months).

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Patrol division of the Police Department.

  • Assume the role of incident commander during large-scale events.
  • Implement policy and procedures for the department.
