About The Position

The Police Sergeant supports JCCC mission by serving as a critical first-line supervisor, bridging the gap between departmental leadership and field operations. This role is responsible for the direct supervision, training, and mentorship of sworn police personnel to ensure the safety and security of the campus community. The Sergeant oversees daily shift activities, manages personnel resources, and ensures that all law enforcement actions align with departmental policies, state laws, and institutional values. The incumbent is a working supervisor who maintains full arrest authority and is expected to perform the duties of a uniformed officer, including patrol and emergency response, as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and certification as Kansas-commissioned Police Officer.
  • Must qualify and certify with firearms, ASP baton, CPR, AED, First Aid and Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray.
  • Must obtain NIMS and ICS training certificates.
  • 3+ years of service within the JCCC Police Department required.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • 60 college credit hours or associate’s degree in related field preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing employee performance and goal achievement through formal documentation and evaluations.
  • Providing day-to-day coaching, mentorship, and training on departmental policies and updates.
  • Managing conflict resolution and implementing disciplinary actions; conducting internal investigations into complaints against subordinates while ensuring procedural guarantees and legal protections are upheld.
  • Planning and managing personnel resources to meet the staffing needs of daily safety and security operations.
  • Exercising oversight in resource allocation and ensuring adherence to the departmental budget.
  • Ensuring all standard operating procedures (SOPs), rules, and law enforcement standards are followed across the team.
  • Performing uniformed officer duties, including patrolling, responding to calls for service, and exercising full arrest authority for violations of laws or college rules.
  • Reviewing and approving officer reports regarding accidents, incidents, and suspicious activities, ensuring necessary corrections are made.
  • Overseeing the enforcement of criminal statutes, traffic regulations, accident investigations, and non-criminal public safety services.
  • Researching and implementing crime prevention programs and policies designed to increase campus-wide security.
  • Collaborating with the Clery Act and Title IX teams, as well as the Emergency Preparedness Manager, on compliance and emergency response programs.
  • Participating in shared crime prevention and awareness initiatives to address ongoing public safety issues.
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders.
  • Representing the police department on college-wide committees, task forces, and initiatives.
  • Maintaining positive relations with the college community through professional conduct and courteous service that instills respect.
