Internship 2027 Sensor Hardware Test Engineer

Bedrock Robotics IncSan Francisco, CA
Hybrid

About The Position

As a Sensor Hardware Test intern, you'll work alongside our test engineering team to characterize and validate the sensors - cameras, lidar, and supporting hardware - that power Bedrock's autonomous excavators. You'll help build test fixtures, run structured lab test campaigns, and turn raw sensor data into clear conclusions that guide how we select and integrate hardware. You'll also get out to our field site to see how bench results hold up on a live construction machine. You’ll own a hands-on project involving sensor hardware testing end-to-end, and your results will directly shape what hardware ends up on the next generation of machines.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optics, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • Hands-on experience building or testing hardware through coursework, personal projects, or a prior internship
  • Working proficiency in Python for data processing, scripting, or automation
  • Comfortable with basic lab equipment and electrical debugging (multimeters, oscilloscopes, DAQ systems)
  • Comfortable working outdoors and around active construction equipment, and willing to spend time on-site at our field test location for deployment and field testing
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document technical work clearly for a team

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to cameras, lidar, radar, or other sensing hardware through coursework, internship experience, or personal projects
  • Experience with CAD tools for mechanical fixture design
  • Familiarity with Git and working within a shared codebase
  • Prior coursework, internship, or project experience in robotics, autonomous systems, or controls

Responsibilities

  • Build and iterate on test fixtures and benchtop setups - mechanical mounts, wiring harnesses, DAQ integration - used to characterize camera, lidar, and other sensor hardware
  • Run structured sensor test campaigns in the lab, following defined test procedures and capturing repeatable, well-documented data
  • Help safely deploy test setups and instrumentation out at our field site, and support live field test campaigns on active construction equipment
  • Develop tools to automate data collection, process raw sensor logs, and summarize results against pass/fail criteria
  • Help scope and select test equipment (light meters, targets, DAQ hardware, valves and actuators for environmental or fluid test rigs) for new test setups
  • Support electrical and mechanical debugging of test hardware, including wiring, sensor interfacing, and basic CAD work for fixture design
  • Document test methods, results, and findings, and present conclusions to the test engineering team to inform sensor selection and system design decisions
