Hardware Test Engineer

Astranis•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

As a Hardware Test Engineer at Astranis, you will work across engineering disciplines to ensure hardware meets high standards for quality and reliability. You will own testing from concept through high-rate production, building test plans and systems to validate designs, operating labs to generate evidence, presenting results that inform decisions, and following failures through to corrective action. The role is suited to a self-driven engineer who has built test systems and software from the ground up. You will define test requirements and methods for the stresses hardware experiences in its operating environment; write and execute qualification and validation plans; and design, build, and automate test equipment, fixtures, and instrumentation in Python. You will also operate and maintain environmental chambers and other test equipment, prepare procedures and reports, present findings to stakeholders and leadership, and lead failure investigations through corrective-action closure.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience testing power electronics, avionics, or other high-reliability electronic hardware.
  • Passion for hardware development, including working in a fast-paced environment and hands-on design and development.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to turn high-level requirements into clear design and test objectives.
  • Experience with environmental chambers, automated test equipment, and test fixtures.
  • Strong ability to read schematics and understand circuits.
  • Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, DMMs, DAQs, power supplies, electronic loads, and SMUs.
  • Experience with digital interfaces and protocols such as CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, and Ethernet.
  • Proficiency in Python for test automation and data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Work cross-functionally to define test requirements and select methods that cover stresses hardware experiences in its operating environment.
  • Write and execute qualification and validation test plans, including functional, thermal cycling, vibration, shock, TVAC, accelerated life, and HALT/HASS testing.
  • Design, build, and automate test equipment, fixtures, and instrumentation end to end in Python, maximizing throughput to support fast design cycles.
  • Select, operate, and maintain environmental chambers, data acquisition systems, custom test racks, and measurement equipment.
