Hardware Test Engineer

Lunar Energy•Mountain View, CA

About The Position

Hardware Test Engineers at Lunar Energy help the engineering team determine whether home energy products are ready to ship and provide the evidence behind that decision. They design and automate test stands to collect product performance data and analyze results across electrical, mechanical, thermal, and software disciplines. The role validates power converters—including inverters, DC-DC converters, and solar optimizers—and battery systems end to end. This includes planning tests, developing test stands and specifications, executing tests, analyzing data, investigating failures, and reporting conclusions. The engineer develops representative field-condition stress profiles informed by product behavior and known failure modes, and creates functional test plans that balance thoroughness with scalability. The engineer designs custom electrical, thermal, and mechanical test stands; defines stand architecture; specifies equipment and instrumentation; and works with technicians on fabrication. They write Python test software to automate testing and process large datasets, and continuously improve test infrastructure. They also support failure analysis and root-cause investigations, identify useful follow-up experiments, and communicate results, limitations, confidence levels, and recommendations to cross-functional teams. The position involves collaboration across electrical, mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing disciplines to understand how design and process changes affect reliability and validation strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or engineering physics.
  • Strong curiosity and ownership, and ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in one or more of electronics/circuit analysis, heat and mass transfer, or statics/mechanics of materials.
  • Experience with electrical test equipment such as power supplies and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience with diagnostic tools such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Python or equivalent programming experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Mechatronics or robotics concentration.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming, state machines, and test automation.
  • Basic mechanical design or CAD experience.
  • Experience testing power electronics or battery systems.

Responsibilities

  • Validate power converters, including inverters, DC-DC converters, and solar optimizers, as well as battery systems.
  • Own end-to-end test activities, including test planning, test stand development, execution, data analysis, failure analysis, and reporting.
  • Develop test specifications that reflect representative field conditions.
  • Translate field data, product behavior, and known failure modes into stress profiles targeting the product’s physics of failure.
  • Develop functional test plans for complex products, balancing thoroughness and scalability across large sample sizes.
  • Design and develop custom test stands for electrical, thermal, and mechanical testing.
  • Define test stand architecture, specify equipment and instrumentation, and work with technicians to design and fabricate test stands.
  • Write Python test software to automate testing and process large datasets.
  • Improve test infrastructure, including software tools and custom test equipment.
  • Help drive failure analysis for test failures and support root-cause analysis for field failures.
  • Analyze test data and failure-analysis results, identify root causes, and determine experiments or data needed to test failure hypotheses.
  • Document and communicate test results, including conclusions, limitations, caveats, confidence levels, and engineering recommendations.
  • Collaborate across electrical, mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing disciplines to understand how design and process changes affect reliability and validation strategy.
