About The Position

Join the Iowa Department of Management’s Division of Information Technology (DoIT) as a Senior UX Designer/Researcher specializing in Accessibility. You will be a key contributor to our digital modernization initiatives, driving user-centered design and accessibility best practices across high-impact state projects, notably the Iowa Department of Education’s Student Reporting in Iowa (SRI) initiative. This is a role for experienced UX professionals passionate about inclusive, data-driven solutions. Local or regional candidates preferred for occasional on-site meetings.

Requirements

• Demonstrated mastery in user experience research, usability labs, heuristic evaluation, user journey mapping, and managing information architecture (8+ years)
• Advanced proficiency in Figma for wireframing, prototyping, and design documentation
• Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with WCAG 2.2 Level AA, focus management, keyboard navigation mechanics, and accessibility auditing
• Proven ability to communicate research findings and design rationale clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
• Expertise in user flow creation, persona development, card sorting, and analytics-driven design recommendations
• Experience working within large-scale, cross-functional project teams

Nice To Haves

• Experience with heat mapping tools (Crazy Egg, Hotjar)
• Formal UX/HCI education or certifications (e.g., ISU HCI, Nielsen Norman Group, Google UX)
• Familiarity with the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS)
• Exposure to front-end engineering in HTML5, CSS/SASS, or integrating UI into Angular/MVC .NET frameworks (not required)

Responsibilities

• Lead formal UX research activities to evaluate complex web application workflows, ensuring usability for educators and state staff
• Conduct and moderate hands-on usability labs and user testing sessions to identify and address friction points
• Perform heuristic evaluations and audit designs for adherence to usability and accessibility standards
• Map user journeys and behavioral personas for diverse state agency workflows
• Structure information architecture using card sorting and other proven methodologies
• Integrate accessibility from the ground up, ensuring WCAG 2.2 Level AA compliance and universal design
• Produce wireframes, prototypes, and annotated design documentation using Figma
• Collaborate closely with UX/Accessibility Architects, product owners, and agency stakeholders to scale design standards and communicate research insights
