About The Position

This position is responsible for inspecting the field installation of water and sewer lines associated with Capital Improvement Projects to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications. The role involves providing written daily status reports, inspecting various testing procedures (waterline pressure tests, chlorine residual checks, sewer line air pressure tests, and sewer manhole vacuum testing), coordinating disinfection, testing, and utility shutdowns. Additionally, the position requires providing written documentation of materials and quantities, completing necessary "as-built" drawings and forms using software applications, and serving as a county representative to citizens regarding construction aspects. This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three years of experience in utility inspections.
  • Experience in construction of roads and/or utility projects or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Good knowledge of methods and materials used in the construction of utility piping systems and infrastructure.
  • Current valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Driving record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months.
  • Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview.
  • Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.
  • Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
  • Must maintain personal mobile technology as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with erosion and sedimentation control procedures as part of the Virginia Erosion Control Handbook.
  • Working skills in reading and interpreting engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ability to apply the principles and methods of surveying.
  • Working skills using surveying equipment, including leveling devices.
  • Knowledge of GPS (Global Position System).
  • Fundamental knowledge of soil testing and compaction.
  • Experience in record keeping.
  • Good communication skills for reporting to the Inspector Supervisor and others within the department.
  • Experience with Windows operating environment on portable computers.
  • ArcView GIS software experience.
