About the position
We are seeking a Gameplay Engineer with experience in shipping games using Unreal Engine. The ideal candidate will work closely with designers and other disciplines to build systems, explore design ideas, and provide options to designers. They will also share their knowledge with both veteran and junior teammates to guide them in learning best practices, gotchas, tips, and tricks with the Unreal Engine. The candidate should have experience working throughout the full cycle of development to ship a game, understand performance costs of gameplay systems, and be able to diagnose, debug, and optimize them. Mentoring and teaching are also important aspects of this role.
Responsibilities
- Work directly with designers and across other disciplines to build systems, explore design ideas, provide options to designers, and seek opportunities to find the fun through regular iteration and playtests
- Share knowledge with both veteran and junior teammates to guide them in learning best practices, gotchas, tips and tricks with the Unreal Engine
- Be a resource to teammates for questions, architectural advice, and general help where needed
- Work closely with designers and other disciplines using UE4 throughout the full cycle of development to ship a game
- Understand performance costs of gameplay systems and how to diagnose, debug, and optimize them
- Use strong listening skills to understand design goals and creatively synthesize solutions for those goals based on experience and the capabilities of the engine
- Use strong communication skills to present options in a way that makes sense to designers and the rest of the team
- Mentor and teach teammates to fish at your level with the engine
- Work together with non-technical colleagues to develop good practices, technical constraints, and team standards
- Endeavor to improve processes, tools, and workflows to maintain the quality and stability of the work produced across disciplines in a fast-paced environment.
Requirements
- Must have professional experience shipping games in the Unreal Engine
- Should be able to build systems, explore design ideas, provide options to designers, and seek opportunities to find the fun through regular iteration and playtests
- Must have experience working closely with designers and other disciplines using UE4 throughout the full cycle of development to ship a game
- Should understand performance costs of gameplay systems and how to diagnose, debug, and optimize them
- Must have strong listening skills to understand design goals and be able to creatively synthesize solutions for those goals based on experience and the capabilities of the engine
