About The Position

The Senior Underwriter underwrites Builders’ Risk policies within established underwriting authority, with limited guidance from leadership. The role makes analytical, data-driven decisions on new and renewal business by evaluating project-specific exposures, structuring coverage, and pricing risks appropriately. It assesses complex construction and renovation projects, including those with significant values, challenging locations, unusual construction methods, or high individual line sizes. The position manages a portfolio of construction-related clients and develops profitable Builders’ Risk business for Liberty Mutual. It works with internal partners across GRS North America and contributes to product, process, and underwriting tool improvements. The Senior Underwriter also mentors junior underwriters and new hires, analyzes portfolio performance, and communicates emerging trends and opportunities for profitable growth.

Requirements

A degree in Business or equivalent is typically required.
At least 2.5 years, typically 3 or more years, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related experience.
Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within the scope of responsibility.
Competence with all phases and aspects of the underwriting process and proficiency in qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques.
Comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and the ability to define and implement underwriting and administrative processes or workflows to manage them.
A proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.

Responsibilities

Manage a portfolio of brokers, agents, contractors, developers, owners, and other construction-related clients while developing profitable Builders’ Risk business for Liberty Mutual.
Evaluate project plans, budgets, construction schedules, valuations, contracts, loss history, site conditions, catastrophe exposures, contractor experience, and risk-control measures.
Determine appropriate coverage terms, conditions, limits, deductibles, exclusions, and pricing for commercial, residential, infrastructure, renovation, and specialty construction projects.
Maintain strong relationships with agents and brokers, strengthen existing partnerships, develop new opportunities, and represent Liberty Mutual effectively in the marketplace.
Monitor evolving project exposures, including construction delays, scope or valuation changes, occupancy transitions, fire, theft, water damage, windstorm, flood, earthquake, collapse, and other Builders’ Risk loss drivers.
Collaborate with UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, Risk Engineering, Product, Legal, and Directors of Underwriting in GRS North America; contribute to product, process, and underwriting tool improvements.
Mentor junior underwriters and new hires, analyze portfolio performance, and communicate emerging construction and Builders’ Risk trends, underwriting recommendations, and opportunities for profitable growth.
Make analytical, data-driven underwriting decisions on new and renewal business within established authority.
