About The Position

This position involves identifying liability exposures through various sources such as insurance applications, exposure surveys, contract reviews, financial statements, and personnel records. The Senior Underwriter will evaluate exposure information, resolve data issues, and assist staff in controlling or avoiding undesirable liability exposure. Responsibilities include documenting insurance rating classes, providing rating and allocation information to accounting staff, and offering administrative assistance to the Director on complex assignments. The role also serves as a resource for claims staff and a liaison with insurance brokers, university and hospital administrators, and faculty. Additionally, the Senior Underwriter will manage insurance coverage binders, maintain controls to prevent inappropriate coverage extension, and develop/implement policies and procedures for insurance administration and supervisory functions. This includes managing paper flow, database usage, and supervising insurance support staff. The role also oversees the processing of claim reports, ensures claim report verifications, and assists with collecting claim histories from external sources. Other related administrative functions may be requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and three years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Identify liability exposures through insurance applications, exposure surveys, contract reviews, financial statements, faculty appointment records, other personnel records, and a variety of other internal and external sources.
  • Evaluate exposure information and resolve exposure data issues with appropriate administrators.
  • Assist A&P staff with controlling and/or avoiding undesirable liability exposure by detecting circumstances and situations that do or may give rise to increased exposure and by taking measures to control or avoid such risks.
  • Identify and manage the documentation of insurance rating classes for each exposure and provide rating and allocation information and consultation to the accounting staff.
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Director regarding varied and highly complex special assignments with insurance implications.
  • Serve as a resource to the claim staff regarding insurance matters.
  • Serve as a resource to and liaison with insurance brokers, managers, and underwriters, with university administrators and faculty, with hospital administrators, and others regarding insurance matters.
  • Manage the insurance coverage binders and information documents for credentialing, litigation and a variety of other requirements.
  • Maintain controls to assure that coverage is not appropriately extended for undesirable or uninsurable risks.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for assigned insurance administration and supervisory functions.
  • Evaluate and manage relevant paper flow and database usage, and supervise other legislative positions assigned to perform insurance support services.
  • Manage the processing of claim reports to hospitals, managed care providers, other insurers, and other entities as required.
  • Manage controls to ensure claim report verifications by the claim staff, and assist A&P staff with the collection and recordation of claim histories from external sources including but not limited to the National Practitioner Data Bank, other state and federal claim reporting organizations, and commercial insurers.
  • Perform other related administrative functions as requested.
