About The Position

The Senior Underwriter will underwrite new and renewal workers’ compensation insurance which includes engaging with independent agents, soliciting and analyzing profitable new business, evaluating risk, and pricing insurance coverage on middle market to large accounts predominately in Massachusetts and Rhode Island territories. You will use your strong technical underwriting skills and your consultative approach to negotiate proposals and determine terms and conditions for coverage. Through professional relationships you will consult with agents and brokers and position products to agents to drive achieving the mutual goal of profitable growth. Serve as a liaison with agents, with responsibility for managing the overall portfolio of risks across the agency and company by participating in multidisciplinary strategic meetings. In addition to engaging agents and generating flow, you will research and evaluate risk and issue proper pricing and coverage for workers’ compensation insurance on accounts of complex nature and/or exposure. In the process of business development, you will negotiate strategy, terms and conditions, and other pricing structures and mitigation tactics while maintaining the quality of risk and adhering to compliance with workers’ compensation laws including MGL Chapter 152, NCCI procedures, classifications and rules and DBR filings. You will use technology, resources, and your underwriting technical skills to generate flow, quarterback multidisciplinary service teams, and build profitable mutually beneficial relationships and portfolios. As a Senior Underwriter you will engage in mentoring and developing less experienced staff on the technical aspects of underwriting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related professional experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in the P&C industry
  • Knowledge of workers' compensation underwriting principles and mechanics and insurance underwriting regulations
  • Agency and portfolio management experience
  • Communication skills necessary to effectively build relationships, negotiate, and sell
  • Willingness to travel throughout your designated territory
  • Driver’s license and good driving record required

  • In depth knowledge of agent distribution and demonstrated track record of building productive relationships is highly desirable
  • CPCU preferred but not necessary
