About The Position

The Senior Surety Underwriter’s primary responsibility is to underwrite individual surety risks through a demonstration of fundamental surety underwriting skills, risk assessment, financial proficiency, actuarial fundamentals, marketing and communications, and systems and programs. The role involves underwriting surety credits that generate profit while meeting customer needs, identifying and analyzing risk exposures, understanding financial statements and ratios, and comprehending credit risk and actuarial fundamentals. The position also requires marketing and communication skills to build relationships, grow the book of business, and manage producer strategy. The Senior Surety Underwriter will use necessary systems and software programs for daily business.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite individual surety risks
  • Underwrite surety credits which generate a profit for the Company while meeting the needs of the customer
  • Identify risk exposures, analyze contracts and bond forms
  • Analyze and differentiate risks on an account specific basis
  • Manage underwriting meetings with customers to understand operations and internal controls
  • Understand the impact of underwriting decisions on company results
  • Understand credit risk
  • Understand loss trends, loss triangles, and ratemaking
  • Quantify risk based on experience history and forecasting methods
  • Build relationships, internally and externally, to grow the book of business to achieve bottom line profitability for the Company
  • Make presentations and communicate articulately
  • Base communications on strategic thinking
  • Manage producer strategy
  • Use systems and software programs needed to conduct daily business
  • Market and prospect for new business, primarily through travelling throughout the assigned territory
  • Document the underwriting files
  • Determine terms and conditions and complex rating plans
