About The Position

The Senior Surety Underwriter’s primary responsibility is to underwrite individual surety risks through a demonstration of fundamental surety underwriting, risk assessment, financial proficiency, actuarial fundamentals, marketing and communications, and systems and programs skills. This role involves underwriting surety credits to generate profit for the Company while meeting customer needs, identifying risk exposures, analyzing contracts and bond forms, and managing underwriting meetings with customers. The position requires a sophisticated understanding of financial statements and ratios, the impact of underwriting decisions on company results, and credit risk. It also involves understanding loss trends, loss triangles, and ratemaking, as well as quantifying risk based on experience history and forecasting methods. The role includes building internal and external relationships to grow the book of business, making presentations, communicating articulately, and managing producer strategy. The Senior Surety Underwriter will also use systems and software programs needed for daily business.

Responsibilities

  • Marketing and prospecting for new business, primarily through travelling throughout the assigned territory.
  • Documents the underwriting files
  • Determines terms and conditions and complex rating plans
  • Handles more complex files and portfolios
  • Guides and mentors junior staff
