We are looking for a Senior Underwriter to join our Non-Standard Personal Lines Team. Working as part of a team, you will be responsible for analyzing the acceptability of business opportunities according to company guidelines. This includes reviewing and pricing new submissions, renewal business, and endorsements. You will collaborate with the team leader, colleagues, and management to deliver value-added expertise and exceptional service to our broker partners. As a Senior Underwriter, you will help drive the growth and profitability of the company. You will build strong broker relationships and leverage your expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit to grow your book. Supported by a team of experienced practice leaders, managers, and executives, we provide an extensive array of products, ample capacity, and the empowerment needed to enable your success. This is a hybrid position in our Vancouver, Langley or Salmon Arm, BC, office.

Requirements

  • Minimum 4+ years of relevant experience in personal underwriting
  • Hold a Level 2 broker license, or can qualify to obtain within 90 days
  • An advanced understanding of personal lines underwriting theory and the ability to apply this knowledge in day-to-day practice
  • Anticipate and meet the needs of customers; deliver high quality service and are committed to continuous improvement
  • Excellent relationship building & customer service skills
  • Ability to make well informed, effective and timely decisions
  • Ability to pursue and achieve production targets
  • Able to think strategically, formulate objectives and set priorities, and implement plans consistent with long-term interest of the organization
  • Influence team members in a positive manner, and provide short-term direction effectively working towards team goals
  • Foster positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including networking at industry events and being the brand ambassador for the organization
  • Mentor and train less experienced team members
  • Working knowledge of MS Office

Nice To Haves

  • Or currently pursuing a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designation

Responsibilities

  • Perform risk analysis using internal and external data resources for the purpose of quoting, negotiating and authorizing the acceptance of risk of a moderate to high complexity
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including attending industry related seminars and networking events as necessary
  • Negotiate coverage and price with brokers within established corporate guidelines and delegated authority parameters
  • Develop and support professional business partnerships with brokers by providing prompt and professional service, responding to inquiries, acting pro-actively and taking ownership of issues and resolving them with a solution-oriented approach; and drive new business opportunities
  • Communicate decisions and respond to requests in a prompt and professional manner
  • Manage, strengthen and grow a book of profitable business
  • In depth understanding of underwriting guidelines
  • Accept, reject, endorse, renew or cancel moderate to high-risk policies following organization’s guidelines and procedures within authority level
  • Maintaining service level agreements with brokerages
  • Training and mentoring junior staff
  • Senior level of annual production
  • Plans and conducts broker visits and attends company events on their own
  • Understanding market trends and negotiations
