About The Position

The Senior Underwriter’s primary responsibility is to underwrite individual risks through a demonstration of strong skills and abilities in coverage, terms and conditions, risk assessment, financial proficiency, actuarial fundamentals, marketing and communications, and systems and programs. The role involves offering coverage that generates profit while meeting customer needs, identifying and assessing risk exposures, understanding financial statements and insurance financial fundamentals, analyzing loss trends and ratemaking, selling and negotiating for profitability, making presentations, managing producer strategy, and utilizing necessary systems and software. Duties include selecting and underwriting individual risks within established business plans and assigned authority, utilizing corporate pricing and reinsurance techniques, providing timely input on assigned projects to support profitable growth, monitoring the book of business and recommending corrective actions, making customer presentations to develop broker relationships, participating in audits and underwriting meetings, cross-selling opportunities within other Chubb divisions, and traveling 25% within the Western United States.

Requirements

  • Minimum 4+ years of current underwriting/insurance experience
  • Strong marketing and underwriting skill set with an emphasis on relationships and exposures in the Midwest
  • Able to work collaboratively and prioritize in a matrix environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • PC and Microsoft Office Products proficient

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite individual risks through a demonstration of coverage, terms and conditions, risk assessment, financial proficiency, actuarial fundamentals, marketing and communications, and systems and programs.
  • Offer coverage, terms and conditions which generate a profit for the Company while meeting the needs of the customer.
  • Identify risk exposures, special or common hazards, and appropriate controls.
  • Select risk based on exposure and risk analysis.
  • Analyze claims and quantify losses.
  • Understand financial statements and ratios used in risk analysis.
  • Understand insurance financial fundamentals and the impact of underwriting decisions on company assets.
  • Understand loss trends and ratemaking.
  • Quantify risk based on experience history and forecasting methods.
  • Sell and negotiate to achieve bottom line profitability for the Company.
  • Make presentations and communicate articulately.
  • Base communications on strategic thinking.
  • Manage producer strategy.
  • Use systems and software programs needed to conduct daily business.
  • Within established business plans and assigned authority, select, analyze and underwrite individual risks utilizing corporate pricing and reinsurance techniques to obtain desired results.
  • Provide quality and timely input on assigned projects in order to meet the Company’s needs in the changing market and support profitable growth.
  • Monitor results of the overall book of business assigned and recommend corrective action as necessary to insure retention of desirable accounts.
  • Make customer presentations/visits on behalf of Chubb Ocean Marine to develop positive, long-term broker relationships.
  • Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.
  • Cross-sell opportunities within other Chubb divisions through promotion of their products and services.
