About The Position

Join AXA XL's Construction team as a Senior Underwriter specializing in Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI) and related products. In this dynamic role, you'll leverage your expertise to assess complex construction risks, develop innovative insurance solutions, and build strong relationships with brokers and contractors across Canada. You'll work collaboratively across business divisions while maintaining a profitable portfolio and driving strategic growth for one of the industry's leading specialty insurers.

Your focus is to establish influential relationships internally and externally and to act as the critical interface between the broker and clients and the company. You are expected to continuously contribute to improving current working and underwriting practices.

Requirements

• College degree or equivalent experience.
• Moderate Construction underwriting experience (SDI, Property, Casualty or Surety) or brokerage equivalent.
• Robust analytical and problem-solving skills as well as strong sales and marketing abilities.
• Ability to effectively communicate and negotiate with senior personnel, brokers and clients.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
• Effective computer skills (MS Office) are critical for the success of this position.
• Willingness for flexible work hours and travel up to 20% of the time.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with Large Loss Sensitive programs and/or Loss Prevention is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Acquire new business and manage renewals with approved brokers; conduct technical risk assessments, pricing analysis, and deal structuring for sophisticated general contractors
• Apply skillful, decisive underwriting judgment to evaluate applications, terms, loss history, and financial statements; determine risk degree based on company guidelines and underwriting authority
• Design innovative risk transfer solutions tailored to unique customer needs while protecting AXA XL's profitability and maintaining portfolio performance
• Coordinate seamlessly with Risk Engineering, Actuarial, Claims, Reinsurance, Accounting, and other internal teams to support underwriting decisions and drive product density
• Establish and nurture robust relationships internally and externally, serving as the critical interface between brokers, clients, and the company
• Contribute to enhancing underwriting practices and industry leadership in construction technology and sustainability
