About The Position

SLR Consulting (US) is seeking a Senior Transportation Design Engineer to play an important role in achieving their goal of Making Sustainability Happen. This role involves working closely with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and being a crucial leader in transportation engineering design. The engineer will lead the technical preparation of construction plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) while helping grow the company's technical design capabilities in Smart City infrastructure, micro-mobility facilities, TDM integration, Safe/Complete Streets, and multi-modal corridors. The primary location for this role is Cheshire, Connecticut.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • 10+ years of increasingly responsible professional experience in transportation infrastructure design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification is required (ability to obtain reciprocity in target states if necessary).
  • High proficiency with industry-standard design software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation/InRoads/OpenRoads).
  • Familiarity with evolving best practices and design guidelines (AASHTO, NACTO, state DOT manuals) regarding smart cities, micro-mobility, and urban multi-modal design.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel by airplane and car, including overnight travel.
  • Detail-oriented, critical thinker, dedicated to quality work, with strong interpersonal, written, and graphic communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the preparation of detailed engineering designs, geometric layouts, cross-sections, drainage, and utilities for urban roadways, multi-modal corridors, and active transportation infrastructure.
  • Responsible for the final delivery of comprehensive PS&E (Plans, Specifications, and Estimates) packages in compliance with local, state, and federal standards.
  • Win work and identify future design opportunities; prepare technical approaches for proposals and respond to RFPs/RFQs.
  • Manage client relationships, maintain project schedules, and deliver complex design projects on-budget.
  • Work seamlessly across disciplines (environmental, regulatory, and advisory) to ensure sustainable and resilient design solutions.
  • Supervise, mentor, and perform quality control reviews for junior design engineers and CAD technicians.
  • Present complex engineering designs and visual concepts clearly to clients, stakeholders, and the public during outreach events.
