About The Position

Houston Engineering, Inc. (HEI) is hiring a Senior Traffic Engineer in Des Moines, Iowa, to help design safer and more efficient transportation systems. The role serves state departments of transportation, counties, municipalities, and metropolitan planning organizations. The engineer will perform transportation and traffic planning and design work, analyze operations and traffic impacts, improve signal timing, and study intersection safety. The position also supports organizational growth by identifying and pursuing business and project opportunities.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
At least 8 years of experience as a Traffic Engineer.
State Professional Engineer’s License.
Familiarity with MUTCD, AASHTO, HCM, IES, and other technical resources and guides.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external teams.
Strong critical-thinking skills.
Strong technical writing and communication skills.
Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with internal and external groups.
Authorization to work permanently in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.

Responsibilities

Engage with state DOTs, counties, municipalities, and metropolitan planning organizations.
Identify, pursue, and support new business and project opportunities.
Design traffic signal systems, lighting systems, fiber optics, traffic control, signing, and pavement markings.
Perform traffic operations analysis for transportation and traffic planning studies and designs.
Conduct traffic impact analysis studies to understand and improve traffic flow.
Optimize traffic signal timing to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion.
Analyze traffic and crash data and conduct intersection safety studies to improve road safety.
