About The Position

VIA Rail is undertaking significant projects to modernize its services and infrastructure, including a new train fleet and ongoing infrastructure improvements. The Technical Advisor will report to the Senior Manager, Technical Advisors & Labs and will provide essential technical support to the teams at the Toronto Maintenance Centre. This role involves monitoring the performance of rolling stock and identifying/documenting reliability and safety issues.

Requirements

  • Technical diploma (DEC or AEC) or electrical or mechanical certification (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of work experience with railway equipment or equivalent.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • May be required to travel to support equipment located on the road or at another maintenance center.
  • Night shift.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Technical Advisor, considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Teams, Wi-Tronix, QUADS, Railigent, and Maximo is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a subject matter expert for first- and second-level technical failures, supporting maintenance personnel with expertise in locomotives and passenger rail cars (brakes, compressed air, diesel engine, control systems, traction motors, power and control circuits, HVAC systems, etc.).
  • Facilitates knowledge transfer and provides coaching to Mechanical and Maintenance Services teams.
  • Manages technical failures that could impact train departures, resolving new and/or evolving issues within tight timeframes.
  • Ensures team alignment and prioritizes work to meet established standards and timelines.
  • Reviews train delays at the start of each shift, documenting Wi-Tronix data and defects in virtual logbooks with mechanical services.
  • Assists Mechanical and Maintenance management in prioritizing defects and estimating repair times.
  • Applies technical expertise to enhance rolling stock conditions and proposes improvements to the Engineering team for better reliability and performance.
  • Collaborates with Mechanical and Maintenance teams to monitor recurring defects, document root causes, and recommend corrective solutions.
  • Leads discussions with various teams (management, planning, unionized employees) to foster idea sharing for problem resolution and propose innovative solutions.
  • Performs validation activities on equipment for the Engineering team in prototype design.
