About The Position

At Hopper, we are redefining how people travel by building the most transparent and customer-centric travel marketplace, against a backdrop of rapid global growth involving a complex array of products, transactions, and tax territories. As a Senior Tax Manager, you will be responsible for federal, state, provincial, and local tax compliance, reporting, and planning for North America, while helping to scale the tax function with the company’s growth. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to build tax infrastructure in a late-stage, hyper-growth company—not just maintain it.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of U.S. state and local tax experience, including transaction taxes for a digital marketplace, with a combination of public accounting (large or regional firm) and in-house experience
  • Proven Canadian indirect tax (GST/HST/QST) and provincial income tax compliance experience
  • Strong knowledge of ASC 450 and functional knowledge of ASC 740
  • Hands-on experience collaborating with product and engineering teams on tax logic, automation, or systems implementation
  • Experience with Avalara and NetSuite; Excel proficiency required; knowledge of SQL or Google BigQuery is a plus
  • CPA title or Master’s in Taxation (preferred); Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • Experience in hospitality or travel tax is a significant plus
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment with a problem-solving mindset and a sense of ownership

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end indirect tax compliance for all North American filings, including sales, lodging/hospitality, GST/HST/QST, gross receipts taxes, and excise taxes—including registrations, taxability determinations, payments, and reconciliations
  • Prepare and review U.S. and Canadian federal, state, and provincial tax returns, estimated payments, and extension requests
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Product teams to identify eligible R&D activities and prepare defensible claims for the U.S. Investment Tax Credit (Form 6765) and Canadian SR&ED (T661/T2SCH31)
  • Coordinate with external advisors (including Avalara and accounting firms) and support responses to federal, state, and local audits—managing inquiries, data extractions, supporting documentation, and auditor exchanges
  • Prepare monthly indirect tax provisions and support the annual income tax provision in accordance with ASC 450 and ASC 740
  • Monitor legislative tax changes and assess their impact on Hopper’s business in partnership with the legal team
  • Collaborate with Finance, Legal, and Hospitality teams on new product launches, nexus analyses, and efficient tax structuring
  • Work directly with the tax engineering team to implement and quality-control changes to tax logic, ensuring accurate tax determination within complex booking flows
  • Develop and maintain scalable compliance processes, documentation, and controls as Hopper expands into new territories
