About The Position

At Hopper, we’re redefining how people travel by building the most customer-friendly and transparent travel marketplace. With rapid global expansion and a complex mix of products, transactions, and jurisdictions; tax compliance and planning are critical to our success. We’re looking for a Senior Tax Manager to take ownership of North American (U.S. and Canada) federal, state and local tax compliance, reporting, and planning. You will support our monthly provisions, coordinate with external advisors, and help scale the company’s tax processes as we grow. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys being hands-on, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and wants to help shape the tax function at a late-stage, high-growth startup.

Requirements

  • 4–7+ years of US state and local tax experience, including transaction taxes for a digital marketplace, with a mix of public accounting (Big 4 or regional firm) and in-house experience
  • Demonstrated experience with Canadian indirect tax (GST/HST/QST) and provincial income tax compliance
  • Strong knowledge of ASC 450 and working knowledge of ASC 740
  • Hands-on experience partnering with product and engineering teams on tax logic, automation, or system implementation
  • Experience with Avalara and NetSuite; proficiency in Excel; SQL or Google BigQuery familiarity is a plus
  • A CPA designation or Master's in Tax (preferred); Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • Lodging or travel-related tax experience is a strong asset
  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment with a problem-solving, build-it-from-scratch mindset

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end indirect tax compliance across all North American filings, including sales, hotel/lodging, GST/HST/QST, gross receipts, and excise — covering registrations, taxability decisions, payments, and reconciliations
  • Prepare and review US and Canadian federal, state, and provincial income tax returns, estimated payments, and extensions
  • Partner with engineering and product teams to identify qualifying R&D activities and prepare defensible US (Form 6765) and Canadian SR&ED (T661/T2SCH31) claims
  • Coordinate with external advisors (including Avalara and accounting firms) and support responses to federal, state, and local audits — managing IDRs, data pulls, substantiation, and auditor interfaces
  • Prepare monthly indirect tax provisions and support the annual income tax provision under ASC 450 and ASC 740
  • Monitor legislative changes in tax law and assess implications for Hopper's business in partnership with Legal
  • Collaborate with Finance, Legal, and Hotel teams on new product launches, nexus analysis, and tax-efficient structuring
  • Work directly with the Tax Engineering team to implement and QA tax logic changes, ensuring accurate tax determination across complex booking flows
  • Build and maintain scalable compliance processes, documentation, and controls as Hopper expands into new jurisdictions
