About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is hiring Senior Systems Project Engineers for its Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate. The positions support National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) / Light Matter and Fusion (LMF) projects and focus on advanced laser systems, optomechanical systems, electromechanical systems, and high-power technologies. Engineers provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise to design, develop, and deploy systems and components for scientific, defense, and industrial applications. Projects may involve systems engineering, computational simulation, precision design, advanced manufacturing, prototype development, and rigorous testing. The work takes place in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. Full-time onsite presence is required. The role may be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level, based on knowledge and related experience assessed by the hiring team. At the general level, the engineer works independently with minimal direction, establishes objectives, prioritizes parallel tasks, allocates resources, and helps develop innovative methods and technology to meet project goals. The engineer leads technical teams, resolves complex engineering challenges, manages project schedules and budgets, oversees project execution, mentors team members, communicates technical work to stakeholders and management, and maintains deliverable quality. At SES.4, the engineer operates under consultative direction with substantial authority, applies in-depth analysis and subject matter expertise to highly complex problems, and independently determines strategies and approaches affecting operations and long-term project goals. The engineer uses resources and partnerships to develop capabilities, works with sponsors, customers, and industry partners, and establishes project vision and strategy while influencing technical direction. The position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. External applicants selected for the position must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. The laboratory notes that some duties may require work in Limited Areas where personal and/or laboratory wireless devices are restricted.
