About The Position

As a member of the RPAS Traffic Management Team within NAV CANADA’s Technology Organization, the Senior Systems Engineer contributes to aviation safety and operational efficiency in the rapidly growing use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in Canadian airspace. The Senior Systems Engineer is accountable for applying engineering knowledge and analytical skills in conducting studies and analyses, supporting and leading working groups, preparing plans and designs, completing Engineering projects, and providing advice and technical leadership for life-cycle management of the systems and equipment.

Requirements

  • Graduation with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in electrical, electronics, communications, computer or systems engineering, or certification as a Professional Engineer in Canada.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a Professional Engineer in Canada.
  • 6 years progressive experience on complex engineering projects.
  • Experience working in the development and testing of mission-critical systems, either in‑house or through contractors.
  • Experience in a collaborative environment working with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in the application of safety and quality management systems.
  • A strong knowledge of Professional engineering standards and practice, theory and principles of engineering science and of the practices in specialized field of engineering.
  • Knowledge of software system development, integration and system testing.
  • Knowledge of radio and RF principles.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies, techniques and disciplines for large projects.
  • Ability to write technical specifications, standards, statements of work and other engineering documents.
  • Ability to work under pressure, and to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with tight or conflicting deadlines.
  • Ability to research potential development solutions and best practices and to learn new technologies, domains, and tools.
  • Ability to analyse and synthesize technical information, interpret the results of studies, develop strategies, and present recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Creative and innovative approach to solving problems.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively, with tact and diplomacy, within cross functional teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in teamwork and team leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support for national capital program development and formulation of national strategies to meet operational needs.
  • Provides technical leadership in performance specification, evaluation and testing of RPAS Traffic Management support infrastructure.
  • Leads studies and investigations in technical topics related to RPAS traffic Management to develop new solutions for unresolved problems.
  • Keeps up to date on research in the RPAS Traffic Management industry and on the work of standards development organizations, and contributes to international working groups to ensure the Canadian context is considered.
  • Provides prompt assistance to investigate technical problems with in-service operational systems.
  • Actively promotes and contributes to a Safety and Quality culture within the team.
