About The Position

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to serve as the Edifecs Platform Manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs. This is a full-time, 100% U.S.-based remote position. The role leads the Edifecs application support organization and is responsible for operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment. The position provides technical oversight, manages staffing, drives roadmap execution, and partners with product, architecture, vendor, business, EDI, DevSecOps, and cloud teams. The engineer guides architecture decisions, modernization efforts, cloud scalability, and performance strategies. The role configures and maintains Edifecs XEServer, XEngine, Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs), SpecBuilder, and related modules; guides EDI Analysts in developing, deploying, and optimizing processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows; and troubleshoots mapping issues, validation failures, functional errors, and performance bottlenecks. Responsibilities also include system logging, JVM tuning, certificate and keystore configuration, release deployments, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades. The position requires substantial EDI and AWS experience, including hands-on knowledge of the Edifecs platform, EDI connectivity and integrations, troubleshooting, performance optimization, cloud infrastructure, compliance, and partner governance. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI). Candidates in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington will not be considered. This is a W-2 position. The salary range is $109,623–$126,790. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information and obtain a government-granted security clearance.

Requirements

At least 10 years of experience in EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations, software or data engineering, with strong AWS experience.
Strong knowledge of EDIFECS architecture and transaction lifecycles.
Strong experience in AWS cloud environments.
Hands-on understanding of Edifecs XEServer, including orchestrations, batch flows, and execution contexts.
Hands-on understanding of XEngine, including validation, rulesets, and canonical structures.
Hands-on understanding of TPM, including trading partner configuration, routes, and agreements.
Hands-on understanding of EDI Gateway visibility, audit, search, and reprocessing.
Hands-on understanding of SpecBuilder, including Implementation Guide definitions and map development.
Experience managing technical aspects of inbound and outbound EDI connectivity using AS2, SFTP, FTPS, and HTTPS channels.
Experience with API-based integrations and gateway services.
Experience troubleshooting EDI issues and performing root-cause analysis.
Experience with throughput optimization, engine performance tuning, JVM tuning and memory management, high availability and failover orchestration, and monitoring dashboards.
Understanding of AWS EC2 instance sizing, operating system tuning, storage I/O patterns, file transfer endpoints, routing, firewall coordination, network path debugging, and SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management.
Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative workflows.
Knowledge of compliance, audit, and partner governance.
Infrastructure-as-code experience with Ansible and Terraform.
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to explain technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Comfort driving ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution with limited direction.
Experience with Agile methodologies, including Scrum and Kanban, and JIRA.
Strong documentation habits, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Ability to collaborate with development, operations, and security teams.
U.S. citizenship is required.
Must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI).

Nice To Haves

EDIFECS certification.
Deep hands-on EDIFECS experience with X.12 EDI transaction standards and workflows, including medical claims transactions such as 837, 834, and 277, as well as 270/271 and 278 transactions.
Knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements in cloud data architecture.
Experience with healthcare payer/PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations.
AWS certification.
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Responsibilities

Analyze and resolve mapping issues, validation failures, functional errors, and performance bottlenecks.
Manage system logging, JVM tuning, and certificate and keystore configurations.
Support release deployments, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades.
Collaborate with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, cloud teams, and business teams.
Troubleshoot EDI transaction failures, mapping defects, partner-specific rejection patterns, batch job flow failures, and throughput or performance degradation.
Optimize job throughput and engine performance, tune JVMs and memory management, support high availability and failover orchestration, and use monitoring dashboards for proactive detection.
Gather and translate business reporting requirements into technical data models.
Communicate technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Document architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Collaborate with development, operations, and security teams to support seamless production system operations.
