About The Position

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to serve as the Edifecs Platform Manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs. This is a full-time, 100% U.S.-based remote position. The role leads the Edifecs application support organization and is responsible for operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment. It provides technical oversight, manages staffing, drives roadmap execution, and partners with product, architecture, vendor, and business teams. The engineer guides architecture decisions, modernization, cloud scalability, and performance strategies; configures and maintains Edifecs components; and guides EDI Analysts in developing, deploying, and optimizing processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows. The role also supports troubleshooting, logging and JVM tuning, certificates and keystores, releases, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades. Collaboration with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, Cloud teams, and business teams is central to the position. The position requires 10 or more years of experience in EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations, software or data engineering, with strong AWS experience. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI). A master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline is listed under formal education. The salary range is $109,623–$126,790. Candidates from CA, CO, IL, MN, NJ, NY, OR, or WA will not be considered. This is a W-2 position.

Requirements

10 or more years of experience in EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations, software or data engineering, with strong AWS experience.
Strong knowledge of EDIFECS architecture and transaction lifecycles.
Strong experience in Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud environments.
Hands-on understanding of Edifecs XEServer, XEngine, TPM, EDI Gateway, and SpecBuilder architecture and operations.
Experience with EDI integration and interface management, including inbound and outbound connectivity using AS2, SFTP, FTPS, and HTTPS.
Experience with API-based integrations and gateway services.
Experience troubleshooting EDI, including root-cause analysis of transaction failures, mapping or misalignment defects, partner rejection patterns, batch job failures, and throughput or performance degradation.
Experience with job throughput optimization, engine and JVM tuning, memory management, high availability and failover orchestration, and monitoring dashboards.
Understanding of AWS EC2 instance sizing, OS tuning, storage I/O patterns, file transfer endpoints, routing, firewall coordination, network path debugging, and SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management.
Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative workflows.
Knowledge of compliance, audit, and partner governance.
Infrastructure-as-code experience with Ansible and Terraform.
Ability to communicate technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Experience gathering and translating business reporting requirements into technical data models.
Ability to drive ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution with limited direction.
Experience with Agile methodologies, including Scrum and Kanban, and JIRA.
Strong documentation habits, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Ability to collaborate with development, operations, and security teams.
U.S. citizenship is required.
Must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI).

Nice To Haves

EDIFECS certification.
Deep hands-on EDIFECS experience with X.12 EDI transaction workflows, including medical claims (837, 834, 277, etc.) and 270/271 and 278 transactions.
Knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements in cloud data architecture.
Experience with healthcare payer/PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations.
AWS certification.
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Responsibilities

Lead the Edifecs application support organization as Platform Manager, ensuring operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment.
Provide technical oversight, manage staffing, and drive roadmap execution.
Partner with product, architecture, vendor, and business teams.
Guide architecture decisions, modernization efforts, cloud scalability, and performance strategies.
Configure and maintain XEServer, XEngine, Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs), SpecBuilder, and related modules.
Guide EDI Analysts in building, deploying, and optimizing Edifecs processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows.
Analyze and resolve mapping issues, validation failures, functional errors, and performance bottlenecks.
Manage system logging, Java Virtual Machine (JVM) tuning, and certificate and keystore configurations.
Support release deployments, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades.
Collaborate with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, Cloud teams, and business teams.
Troubleshoot EDI transaction failures, mapping defects, partner-specific rejections, batch job flow failures, and throughput or performance degradation.
Optimize job throughput and engine performance; support high availability, failover orchestration, and proactive monitoring.
Gather and translate business reporting requirements into technical data models.
Document architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Work collaboratively with development, operations, and security teams to support seamless production system operations.
