Senior Systems Engineer - Traffic Management

Nubank•Palo Alto, CA
•$124,000 - $156,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Traffic Management team keeps Nu’s customer-facing and internal services reachable and secure. It owns the service-mesh strategy and execution, routing and protecting service requests across regions and environments. The Senior Systems Engineer will drive the reliability, scalability, and security of this critical platform by evolving the service mesh, strengthening resilience and observability, and enabling product teams to ship quickly without compromising stability. The role includes delivering traffic-platform milestones from problem definition through rollout and follow-up; taking ownership of complex and ambiguous problems; and proposing pragmatic solutions that balance reliability, performance, security, and effort. The engineer will collaborate with engineering, product, and partner teams to translate needs into technical plans, ensure quality through testing and observability, respond to incidents, and drive improvements that prevent recurrence. The role also includes using AI tools and agents in everyday engineering work, maintaining technical documentation and runbooks, sharing knowledge, supporting other engineers through feedback and collaboration, and participating in support and on-call routines. The position is hybrid, with office attendance at least twice a week, and is located in Miami or Palo Alto, United States.

Requirements

  • Experience operating large-scale, high-performance synchronous distributed systems in the cloud, including load balancers, reverse proxies, TLS/mTLS, and routing.
  • Experience using metrics, logs, and traces to debug issues, optimize performance, and improve reliability.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes-based infrastructure and Infrastructure-as-Code tooling, including manifests, routing and deployment strategies, and DNS configuration.
  • Experience using AI tools or agents in daily engineering work, with consistent validation of outputs and attention to quality and safety.
  • Experience leading infrastructure platform projects from design through production launch, including milestone planning, stakeholder coordination, risk and trade-off management, and post-rollout stabilization.
  • Production experience with AWS networking and compute services, including ALB/NLB, security groups, VPC, Route 53, and IAM.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Pulumi or Terraform to safely and repeatably design, version, and deploy cloud and Kubernetes infrastructure changes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Istio or other service-mesh technologies such as Linkerd or Envoy-based solutions, or legacy stacks such as Finagle, including designing and evolving traffic policies, resilience features, and observability for service-to-service communication.
  • Experience building platform capabilities or shared libraries for other engineers, such as abstractions, SDKs, or internal tooling that help product teams use traffic and networking capabilities safely at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver end-to-end traffic-platform milestones, from problem definition through rollout and follow-up, while breaking work into clear tasks and making progress and risks visible.
  • Analyze complex or ambiguous problems and propose pragmatic solutions that balance reliability, performance, security, and effort.
  • Design for failure, establish appropriate tests and observability, respond quickly to incidents, and drive follow-ups that prevent recurrence.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product teams, and partner teams to understand needs, align priorities, and create technical plans and milestones connected to team goals.
  • Use AI tools and agents to investigate issues, write and review code, explore solution options, and automate repetitive work; help the squad adopt safe and effective AI workflows.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and runbooks, and share knowledge through reviews, sessions, and function-level initiatives.
  • Support other engineers through feedback, code reviews, design discussions, pairing, and day-to-day collaboration.
  • Participate in support and on-call routines, using incidents, tickets, and metrics to identify and drive medium-term platform and process improvements.
