About The Position

Arlington County's Department of Technology Services (DTS) is hiring an experienced Senior Systems Administrator (Microsoft Exchange) to provide high-level work as part of the Hosting and Infrastructure team. The Hosting and Infrastructure team is responsible for the administration and operational reliability of the County’s enterprise infrastructure, including server environments, Active Directory, and Microsoft Office 365 services. The Senior Systems Administrator (Microsoft Exchange) will serve as the senior technical resource for the County’s email and messaging environment, supporting a Microsoft Exchange and Azure-based platform used across all departments. The role is responsible for ensuring system availability, security, and performance and functions as the lead administrator for this service area. The ideal candidate will have proven experience performing advanced systems administration work, including managing Exchange environments, administering mailboxes and identity services, implementing security controls (e.g., SPF, DKIM, DMARC), monitoring system performance, and resolving complex mail flow and authentication issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, or a related field
  • Considerable experience directly related to managing and implementing information systems, operating systems, Storage Area Networks (SAN), systems analysis, and networking

Nice To Haves

  • Microsoft Certified: Administrator Expert (MS-102) is preferred
  • Hands‑on experience with Exchange and Office 365 administration, along with strong skills in Active Directory, Windows Server, PowerShell automation, and messaging/security management
  • Email security tools, threat protection, and compliance features
  • Virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper‑V) supporting Exchange environments
  • Implementing retention policies, litigation hold, eDiscovery, and compliance center features

Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain the County’s Microsoft Exchange and Office 365 email infrastructure, including server performance, security settings, and system monitoring
  • Manage user mailboxes, distribution lists, and access permissions while ensuring adherence to County policies and regulatory requirements
  • Configure and support email security measures and threat‑protection tools, including spam filtering, encryption, and authentication standards
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve mail flow issues, synchronization problems, and system performance concerns
  • Troubleshoot complex issues related to email delivery, synchronization, and system integrations
  • Support hybrid cloud operations, including Azure Active Directory synchronization and identity management
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, and system standards
  • Automate administrative tasks using scripting and reporting tools, and collaborate with network, security, and application teams to ensure reliable and secure email service delivery
