About The Position

The Senior System Safety Engineer - HLS Program will support NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) initiatives within the Human Landing Systems (HLS) Program located in Huntsville, AL. The selected candidate will be assigned to support NASA insight into commercial Human Landing System (HLS) design, development, test, evaluation, and operations and provide senior-level technical safety expertise to help NASA understand, assess, and influence the safety posture of commercially provided lunar landing capabilities. This position supports NASA's safety and mission assurance responsibilities by evaluating whether the provider's design, analyses, verification activities, test programs, operational concepts, and risk management processes adequately identify, control, and verify hazards associated with crewed lunar transportation and surface operations.

Requirements

  • This position requires US Citizenship due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • Must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or other STEM-related degree.
  • Must have 5+ years of recent and related work experience in System Safety Engineering (Relevant graduate level education or SMA Professional Certification may serve in lieu of 1-year relevant experience.)
  • Possess senior-level knowledge and practical experience in system safety engineering for complex aerospace, spacecraft, launch vehicle, or human spaceflight systems. This includes the ability to identify hazards, evaluate credible causes, assess risk, define or evaluate hazard controls, and determine whether verification evidence supports closure of safety concerns.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and TEAMS.
  • All of Bastion's employees must be team players with strong work ethics and must be culture oriented.
  • Able to communicate effectively, verbally and in written form, with internal and external customers.

  • Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting NASA human spaceflight programs is highly desired, particularly where the candidate has worked directly with NASA safety review processes, program safety organizations, or commercial partner safety products.
  • Experience working in a commercial spaceflight environment or insight-based acquisition model is highly desirable.
  • Ability to develop fault tree analysis, logic trees, risk definition and mitigation analyses, hazard analysis and trending and data searches. Experience with Computer Aided Fault Tree Analysis (CAFTA) Software is highly desired.
  • Experience with advanced or complementary safety analysis methods is desired, particularly where these methods improve understanding of complex integrated system behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Provide for NASA insight into the design, development, test, evaluation, and operations associated with Commercial Partner Lunar Lander Systems.
  • Develop and present the results of System Safety Engineering analyses and related Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) documentation to the HLS Program and MSFC Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Management during major Program milestone reviews, Safety Reviews, and other technical and SMA reviews in support of Certificate of Flight Readiness (CoFR) processes.
  • Perform and/or assess hazard analyses for both in-house and contracted design and development projects, to assure that: (a) all hazards are identified and the associated risks properly characterized; (b) hazard controls satisfy safety requirements and mitigate safety risks; (c) safety verification requirements are clearly identified, including the clear definition of verification pass/fail criteria; and (d) the safety verification status is maintained in a closed loop accounting system.
  • Prepare and assess Safety Plans (for both assigned in-house and contracted) design, development, and operational projects to assure compliance with applicable Agency, Center and Program safety requirements.
  • Assess and contribute to the development of Project Plans to ensure that safety is properly considered.
  • Perform and assess trade studies related to design, development, operation, or mission events for assigned in-house and contracted projects, to assure compliance with safety requirements and to assure safety risks are identified, characterized, and mitigated.
  • Assess program or project documentation (e.g., Contractor PWS, Data Requirements Documents, System Requirements Document, Contract End Item, Requirements Verification Compliance procedures) to assure that all safety requirements are addressed in compliance with Government requirements.
  • Assess and support development of program or project verification plans and verification requirements (e.g., Verification Plans, Requirements Verification Compliance (RVC) documents) to assure all safety verification requirements are properly included. Assess or generate safety verification compliance data to assure it clearly demonstrates compliance with the safety verification requirements and parent safety requirement.
  • Assess test and operating procedures to assure compliance with safety controls and safety verification requirements.
  • Assess proposed changes, deviations, and waivers to program and project documentation to assure compliance with safety requirements. This assessment includes evaluation of the impacts to safety and hazard analyses and the effects on program or project risk.
  • Evaluate and provide recommendations for acceptance of Non-compliance Reports, and Requests for Waiver/Deviations.
  • Track to closure all Safety Data Package (SDP) review comments, Safety Review Action Items and Agreements.
  • Track and/or monitor the implementation and validation of hazard controls in accordance with approved hazard reports and verification plans.
  • Other duties as assigned.
