About The Position

Anduril’s Manufacturing Safety Engineering team partners with manufacturing, engineering, and operations to ensure production systems are safe to build, test, and sustain at scale. The team designs safety into equipment, fixtures, test stations, and factory-floor work instructions throughout the production lifecycle, from new equipment and line design through ramp and sustained operations. It applies formal risk assessment and the hierarchy of controls, working closely with EHS, controls and manufacturing engineers, and production leadership. The Manufacturing Safety Engineer applies formal risk assessment and prevention-through-design principles to production equipment, lift fixtures, test stations, and manufacturing processes. The role serves as an on-the-floor technical authority, supporting equipment and line bring-up, ramp, and sustained operations. This evergreen requisition builds a pipeline of engineers. The role is described as based in Costa Mesa, California, and supports manufacturing operations, including sites at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and Atlanta, Georgia. Specific team, site, and program assignments are determined during the interview process based on business need and candidate background.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Safety Engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • 7 or more years of experience in manufacturing/machine safety, equipment or controls engineering, or a related discipline, with demonstrated ownership of risk assessments.
  • Hands-on experience performing formal machine and task-based risk assessments and applying the hierarchy of controls.
  • Working knowledge of machine safeguarding and applicable OSHA 29 CFR 1910 general-industry requirements, including machine guarding and control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout).
  • Experience developing Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and translating risk-assessment findings into work instructions, controls, and training.
  • Experience designing safety into production and/or test equipment, in partnership with EHS and electrical safety specialists.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence cross-functionally on the factory floor and with engineering teams.
  • Eligibility to pursue and maintain a U.S. security clearance, as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with machine safety standards such as ISO 12100, ISO 13849, and ANSI B11.
  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline, a professional safety credential (CSP or ASP), or a machinery-safety credential (CMSE).
  • Functional-safety experience determining Performance Level or SIL for safety-related control systems, and functional-safety certification (CMSE or TÜV FSEng).
  • Experience with production test-equipment safety.
  • Experience in a high-rate or rapidly scaling manufacturing environment, ideally in aerospace, defense, automotive, or a comparable regulated industry.
  • Active U.S. security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead formal machine and task-based risk assessments for production equipment, fixtures, tooling, and processes, documenting hazards, risk ratings, required controls, and residual risk.
  • Review manufacturing work instructions and supporting training materials for safety adequacy; author Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and incorporate required controls, PPE, and safe-work steps.
  • Engineer and review production equipment, including lift fixtures and material-handling aids, in partnership with EHS, and support proof-load testing.
  • Assess and design safety into production test equipment.
  • Apply the hierarchy of controls and prevention-through-design principles to eliminate or reduce hazards during equipment and line design.
  • Define functional-safety requirements for safety-related control systems and verify their implementation.
  • Partner with EHS to ensure engineering controls meet applicable OSHA 29 CFR 1910 general-industry requirements, including machine guarding, lockout/tagout, electrical safety, PPE, and materials handling.
  • Support incident and near-miss investigations and root-cause analysis; drive corrective engineering actions and management of change.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers and are considered part of total compensation.
