Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a focus on structural engineering.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience with a strong focus on bridge design and rehabilitation.
  • A Maryland Professional Engineer (PE) license (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
  • Extensive experience in steel and concrete bridge design.
  • Strong knowledge of AASHTO LRFD code requirements.
  • Experience with MDOT SHA, DDOT, or similar agency standards.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD for bridge projects.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software (e.g., OpenBridge, STAAD, LARSA, or similar).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • A master's degree in civil engineering with a focus on structural engineering.
  • Experience managing large, complex transportation projects.
  • Experience with bridge load rating, rehabilitation design, and inspection programs.
  • Familiarity with design-build or alternative delivery methods.
  • Experience with tunnel design, inspection, or rehabilitation projects.
  • Completion of Federal Highway Institute (FHI) bridge-related training or certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Managing bridge and structural engineering projects, including client coordination, scope, schedule, budget, staffing, subconsultant oversight, and quality control.
  • Leading structural analysis and design for transportation structures such as bridges, retaining walls, box culverts, and pipes.
  • Overseeing the preparation of engineering calculations, plans, specifications, and design drawings.
  • Managing and delivering bridge design and rehabilitation projects from concept through final design.
  • Conducting and overseeing fieldwork, including site visits and bridge inspections (based on NBIS), and reviewing inspection reports.
  • Performing and reviewing load ratings for bridges and culverts.
  • Reviewing drawings and reports to develop design alternatives, repair recommendations, and cost estimates.
  • Confirming work is in compliance with AASHTO, MDOT SHA, and project-specific standards and requirements.
  • Managing multidisciplinary teams, including roadway, geotechnical, and environmental staff.
  • Serving as a technical lead and mentor to junior engineers and staff.
  • Supporting business development efforts, including proposal preparation and client coordination.
