Senior Staff Software Engineer, Storage

Crusoe•Sunnyvale, CA
•$245,000 - $290,000

About The Position

Crusoe is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer for its Cloud Storage team to serve as a primary architect and visionary for its storage strategy. The role defines the multi-year technical roadmap underpinning AI-scale infrastructure and provides architectural strategy for the integrity and global scalability of Crusoe’s storage services. It bridges high-performance NVMe hardware and globally distributed, S3-competitive object stores. The engineer will define the long-term strategy for Crusoe’s storage engine, contribute to a V2 storage re-architecture, and architect solutions using industry-standard storage protocols. The role serves as a technical authority across the Foundations organization, leads complex architecture reviews and performance investigations, stewards open-source contributions, and collaborates with executive leadership and Product to align technical capabilities with business milestones. Crusoe describes itself as a vertically integrated AI infrastructure company that owns and operates each layer of its stack, from energy to cloud services. Compensation is listed as up to $245,000–$290,000 plus bonus, with Restricted Stock Units included in all offers. Compensation depends on the applicant’s knowledge, education, and abilities, as well as internal equity and market data.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of experience building and operating large-scale, complex distributed cloud computing infrastructure products.
  • Strong troubleshooting and performance-tuning skills, including the ability to profile and optimize the entire IO path.
  • Self-motivation to work in a fast-paced environment with substantial ownership and minimal supervision.
  • Deep theoretical and practical knowledge of distributed state and data protection at petabyte scale.
  • Mastery of professional software engineering practices across the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, build processes, and testing.
  • Ability to champion and lead initiatives across the engineering organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in one or more public cloud offerings: AWS, GCP, Azure, or OCI.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX, and with MLOps.
  • Experience with high-throughput I/O architectures such as DAOS or SPDK.
  • Background in RDMA and high-performance networking, including SmartNICs and RoCEv2.
  • Experience with highly available and scalable systems such as Cassandra, MongoDB, Redis, or Kafka.
  • Strong knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals, including the CAP Theorem, Paxos/RAFT, consistent hashing, and sharding strategies.
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the long-term technical strategy and roadmap for Crusoe’s storage engine, incorporating relevant industry trends such as CXL and NVMe-oF.
  • Build the foundations of the V2 storage re-architecture using system programming languages such as C, C++, Go, and/or Rust.
  • Architect and implement solutions using storage protocols such as NFS, SMB, iSCSI, and NVMe/TCP.
  • Drive and maintain open-source contributions to projects such as Ceph, GlusterFS, Lustre, Spectrum Scale, and OpenEBS.
  • Serve as the final arbiter for critical architecture decisions across the Foundations organization.
  • Lead complex design reviews involving storage, networking, and virtualization.
  • Lead teams investigating difficult performance bottlenecks, from kernel-level IO context switching to global tail latency in distributed clusters.
  • Collaborate with Executive Leadership and Product to align technical capabilities with business milestones.
  • Champion and lead initiatives across engineering, such as technical talks and technical reading groups.
