About The Position

Flip builds AI voice agents that handle millions of real customer conversations for some of the biggest brands, healthcare providers, and transportation companies in the world. We are a low-ego team focused on solving hard problems at scale, running AI in production at a volume few others achieve. Our first principle is the customer, which drives a culture of shipping fast and often, with a direct line from keyboard to production. Agentic development has changed how we work, but experience remains crucial for ensuring speed is safe. We hire builders whose experience makes new speed safe, valuing instinct to build over specific stack experience or corporate pedigree. We keep the team lean to foster an environment where builders can express themselves and achieve deep industry expertise matched with ruthless execution. The work involves serving an orchestrated system of agents answering millions of contacts daily, with expansion into chat. This requires elite engineering and incredible DevOps, as voice is unforgiving, real-time, and has no retries. The work is divided into three lanes: Vertical engineering (building agents, complex workflows, and industry integrations), Platform engineering (orchestration layer for routing, state, and tool use), and Inference & DevOps (hosting models, low-latency serving, telephony, observability, and deployment infrastructure). Engineers have a range of responsibilities, from customer interaction to deep backend systems, with the flexibility to choose their focus and evolve as the company grows. We intentionally offer one role for senior and staff engineers, recognizing that builders have different preferences for working alone or in small pods. We emphasize raising the bar on each other, with opportunities for those who want to lead and mentor, or to remain pure builders. We value real production experience, judgment that survives contact with production, low ego with high execution, and customer obsession.

Requirements

Real production experience: have built and owned systems where failure had consequences.

Experience with Python, MongoDB, AWS, Twilio, Datadog, Snowflake, and Omni is a plus, but not strictly required.

Responsibilities

Build complex multi-step customer workflows and deep integrations into the contact center and industries served (order systems, healthcare workflows, logistics).
Develop the orchestration layer for agents, including routing, state management, and tool usage.
Manage low-latency model serving at production scale, including hosting our own models.
Oversee telephony, observability, and deployment infrastructure to ensure millions of live calls are healthy.
Collaborate directly with customers to understand and solve problems.
Contribute to the development of new modalities like chat.
Own outcomes and ship product, rather than focusing on tickets or plans.
Raise the bar on engineering practices and mentor other engineers if desired.
