Senior Staff Sensor Integration Engineer (R6392)

Shield AI•Seattle, WA
•$228,000 - $340,000

About The Position

Shield AI is seeking a Sensor Integration Engineer to support the selection, characterization, calibration, and integration of multimodal navigation and localization sensors for the X-BAT State Estimation team. The role works across software, electrical, and mechanical engineering and contributes directly to cross-functional engineering efforts. The engineer supports sensor integration from specification through production; develops and executes characterization, calibration, and validation procedures for IMUs, GNSS receivers, cameras, and other navigation sensors; and contributes to sensor trade studies and selection. The role coordinates with electrical, mechanical, and software engineering teams on electrical interfaces, power distribution, signal conditioning, mounting and alignment, thermal and vibration considerations, software interfaces, drivers, data acquisition, and calibration implementation. Additional work includes participating in interdisciplinary design reviews, preparing test plans, documenting sensor characteristics and integration requirements, developing or modifying calibration scripts and data-processing tools, supporting calibration procedures and tooling, debugging issues across hardware, firmware, and software, and reviewing or contributing to schematics, CAD models, and code. The environment combines collaborative work with engineering teams, hands-on laboratory work, analysis, and documentation. Occasional travel may be required for team and supplier coordination or testing support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • 1–4 years of relevant experience; new graduates with strong cross-functional internship or project experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across at least two of the electrical, mechanical, and software domains.
  • Understanding of sensor measurement principles and error sources.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and/or mechanical drawings.
  • Basic proficiency in scripting or programming for data analysis, such as Python, MATLAB, or similar.
  • Familiarity with sensor communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, and CAN.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and sensor testing.
  • Comfort learning and working outside one's primary discipline.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineers from different backgrounds.
  • Willingness to engage with hardware, firmware, and software aspects of sensor systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills across multiple domains.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with navigation or localization sensors such as IMUs, GNSS, cameras, or altimeters.
  • Exposure to sensor calibration or characterization activities.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems or real-time software.
  • Understanding of coordinate transformations or sensor fusion concepts.
  • Experience with automated testing or data acquisition systems.
  • Knowledge of aerospace environmental testing or standards.

Responsibilities

  • Support sensor integration activities from specification through production.
  • Develop and execute characterization and calibration procedures for IMUs, GNSS receivers, cameras, and other navigation sensors.
  • Contribute to sensor trade studies and selection processes.
  • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and software engineering teams on electrical interfaces, power distribution, and signal conditioning.
  • Coordinate on sensor mounting, alignment, thermal considerations, and vibration considerations.
  • Coordinate on software interfaces, drivers, data acquisition, and calibration implementation.
  • Participate in design reviews across electrical, mechanical, and software disciplines, providing interdisciplinary perspective and coordination.
  • Develop and execute test plans for sensor performance characterization and validation.
  • Document sensor characteristics, trade studies, and integration requirements.
  • Develop or modify calibration scripts and data-processing tools.
  • Support development of calibration procedures and tooling.
  • Debug issues spanning hardware, firmware, and software boundaries.
  • Review and contribute to schematics, CAD models, and code as necessary.
