About The Position

Corning is seeking a Senior Staff Scientist - Materials to contribute to its ongoing advancements. This role involves identifying and developing new single crystal materials solutions for semiconductor and aerospace/defense markets, collaborating with R&D and manufacturing for material scaling, benchmarking competitive technologies, and providing technical expertise for customer engagements.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Solid-state Chemistry, Physical Chemistry or other relevant field AND 10 years experience
  • Deep technical understanding of single crystal materials and their optical properties
  • Demonstrated deep knowledge and skills in understanding material growth and characterization methods
  • Proven ability to define, execute, analyze, and communicate results from experiments
  • Proven ability to perform independent scientific work from concept to documentation
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions by combining analytical thinking with practical judgment
  • Ability to work independently and to interface with large teams, working across departmental/discipline boundaries
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Practical experience in vertical Bridgman single crystal growth and growth of large crystals
  • Working knowledge of optical materials, including glass and glass ceramics.
  • Working knowledge of metrology related to the optical properties and characteristics of material

Responsibilities

  • Develop fundamental understanding of single crystal growth processes and drive improvements to current processes to increase yield or quality of products.
  • Engage across the business team – R,D,&E, production, commercial, sales- to troubleshoot and improve existing product lines.
  • Lead technical investigations into materials growth, properties, or application including experimental planning, execution, data analysis, and communicating results providing impact.
  • Conduct failure mode analysis to determine root cause and identify path to improve performance, yields, costs and safety.
  • Work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
