Senior Materials Scientist

Avery Dennison•Mentor, OH
•$120,000 - $160,000•Onsite

About The Position

Avery Dennison is seeking a creative and scientifically rigorous Senior Materials Scientist to advance understanding and development of silicone and non-silicone release systems, acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives, and other materials technologies used in pressure-sensitive and functional laminate platforms. The role combines polymer chemistry, physics, interface science, and AI/ML-enabled materials development to deepen scientific understanding and help transform materials development in R&D. The scientist will translate scientific concepts into practical technology solutions for the company’s global manufacturing footprint.

Requirements

  • PhD in Polymer or Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years of direct industrial R&D experience developing novel materials paradigms, with demonstrated expertise in polymer science, coatings, or related fields.
  • Ability to connect materials structure, formulation, processing, properties, and performance through rigorous scientific reasoning and independent experimentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using automated high-throughput experimentation, robotics, self-driving autonomous laboratory concepts, or developing model-ready scientific databases.
  • Industrial R&D experience with silicone release coatings, release liners, silicone formulations, or related technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Drive fundamental understanding of complex materials and phenomena, including silicone and non-silicone release coatings, polymeric adhesives, gels, colloids, and multilayer laminates.
  • Develop new material paradigms and translate scientific understanding into practical, scalable materials, process solutions, and differentiated products.
  • Identify and lead experimentation and/or modeling approaches to establish scientific relationships among structure, properties, processes, and performance.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to translate concepts into practice and design experiments that test hypotheses using scientifically driven experimentation and predictive computational insights.
  • Establish the scientific and experimental foundation for autonomous self-driving laboratory capabilities by connecting automated high-throughput experimentation, scientific databases, predictive models, and human scientific judgment.

Benefits

  • Inclusive Care: primary and specialty care from a provider with LGBTQ+ experience.
  • 401(k) plan with an automatic contribution of 3% of eligible pay and a matching contribution of 50% on the first 7% of eligible pay contributed.
  • Paid parental leave at 100% of salary during approved parental leave for biological, adoptive, and/or foster parents.
  • Generous paid time off program that varies based on experience and position.
