Senior Staff Hardware Engineer Technical Lead, AI Infrastructure

Google•Sunnyvale, CA
•$236,000 - $329,000

About The Position

The Emergent AI infrastructure team at Google is building next-generation on-premises AI infrastructure for frontier model and AI solution builders. This role focuses on developing fully integrated AI infrastructure systems spanning hardware, software design, and workload management, including very large AI clusters using advanced AI accelerators, cluster interconnects, and networking. The position offers the opportunity to build new products rather than only evolve existing ones. The engineer will provide technical leadership for data center AI infrastructure, directing system architecture strategy and hardware programs from concept through high-volume manufacturing and deployment. The role involves guiding cross-functional engineering teams and external partners, integrating third-party hardware platforms, and scaling infrastructure across matrixed engineering disciplines. The position also sets the strategy for lab validation and system bring-up while delegating operational execution and detailed root-cause analysis to testing teams and contractors. Individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. The listed U.S. compensation is $236,000–$329,000 USD, plus a 25% bonus target, equity, and benefits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a specialized field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 8 years of experience in hardware systems development, including functional management and oversight of hardware programs in a technical environment.
  • At least 5 years of experience in technical leadership.
  • Experience directing the full hardware product lifecycle from early concept to high-volume deployment.
  • Experience leading JDMs, CMs, external vendors, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver hardware programs.
  • Experience defining system-level architecture strategy and exercising cross-functional leadership to develop hardware systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience leading system architecture strategy and governing board and electrical engineering implementations through matrixed technical teams.
  • Experience expanding enterprise or data center infrastructure by evaluating, optimizing, and integrating third-party hardware technologies and vendor products.
  • Experience defining long-term technology roadmaps, driving hardware innovation, steering resource allocation to resolve system-level challenges, and delegating operational tasks.
  • Proven ability to synthesize complex engineering data and lead cross-functional groups and external partners through ambiguous root-cause analysis.
  • Demonstrated success building, mentoring, and expanding high-performing hardware engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Direct system architecture strategy for data center AI infrastructure, guiding cross-functional engineering disciplines and key vendors in evaluating, integrating, and optimizing third-party hardware platforms.
  • Govern product lifecycle execution from conceptualization to high-volume manufacturing by directing JDMs and CMs, influencing partner roadmaps, and establishing Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Testability (DFT) strategies.
  • Define the overarching lab validation and system bring-up strategy, delegating operational execution and detailed root-cause analysis to cross-functional testing teams and external contractors while maintaining strategic oversight of the hardware ecosystem.
  • Lead the strategic scaling of Emergent AI infrastructure by steering matrixed engineering disciplines—including Silicon, Firmware, Software, Thermal, Mechanical, and Operations—to deliver cohesive, enterprise-grade solutions.
