About The Position

The Senior Staff Data Engineer will help define Airbnb’s multi-year vision for Data Governance and Data Quality, scaling these capabilities with the company’s global business and evolving AI landscape. The role is part of the Data Stewardship team within Data Infrastructure, which supports compliance across Airbnb’s data ecosystem and helps data consumers identify the best data for their needs. The position leads the design of data architectures that address current batch needs and anticipate real-time and AI-driven requirements. It establishes practices, tools, and culture that enable data organizations to maintain high-quality data autonomously, and works across functions such as Information Security, Legal, and Privacy to translate regulatory requirements into engineering requirements. The role also advises executive leadership on data governance and coaches Senior and Staff engineers across the organization. This position is US remote eligible, with occasional office work or offsites possible as agreed with the manager. The employee must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. The role may be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits. The listed base pay range is $248,000–$310,000 USD.

Requirements

12+ years of industry experience.
Proven track record of leading large-scale data initiatives across multiple departments or business units.
Demonstrated expertise designing and evolving complex data ecosystems in complex, high-volume environments.
Experience influencing product and business strategy through data integrity.
Deep expertise in the Java/Scala/Spark ecosystem.
Strong knowledge of relational databases and SQL query authoring.
Strong ability to drive organizational cultural shifts regarding data ownership and quality.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of S3 and Iceberg.
Ability to vet and introduce proven industry approaches and new technologies to the technology stack.

Responsibilities

Define the multi-year vision for Data Governance and Data Quality, accounting for Airbnb’s global business and evolving AI landscape.
Advise executive leadership on data governance and integrate compliance and stewardship into the data product lifecycle.
Lead the design of data architectures that address batch requirements and anticipate real-time and AI-driven needs.
Define best practices, tooling, and culture that enable data organizations to maintain high-quality data autonomously.
Lead cross-functional task forces with Information Security, Legal, and Privacy to navigate regulatory requirements and translate them into engineering requirements.
Coach Senior and Staff engineers on data best practices and foster a community of excellence.
Influence product and business strategy by leveraging data integrity.
